Mark Kingsley (born David Mark Kingsley) is an American creative director, brand strategist, and author based in New York City.[1] He is the founder of the branding studio Malcontent and has taught in the School of Visual Arts Masters in Branding program since 2012. Design historian Alice Twemlow has written about Kingsley's role in early design-criticism blogging in her book Sifting the Trash: A History of Design Criticism (MIT Press, 2017).[2] He is the author of three books on branding, most recently Brands in the Age of AI (2025).[3]

Early life and education

[edit]

Kingsley grew up near Buffalo in western New York. He studied graphic design at the Rochester Institute of Technology, graduating with a BFA in Graphic Design in 1984.[4]

Career

[edit]

Kingsley began his career in graphic design in the mid-1980s and later co-founded Greenberg Kingsley, a studio specializing in music packaging and arts branding; its design credits, spanning the 1980s to 2007, are documented on AllMusic.[5] At the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in 2000, Kingsley received a nomination for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for Blue Note Records' The Blue Note Years — 60th Anniversary Box Set, alongside collaborators Karen Greenberg and Gordon H. Jee.[6]

Kingsley later served as a creative director at Ogilvy and Landor, and as Executive Strategy Director at Collins.[7][8] In 2011, he founded the branding studio Malcontent, which has continued his earlier work in music and arts branding.[9][10][11]

Writing and criticism

[edit]

Kingsley was a contributing author to SpeakUp, a design-criticism blog, from 2005 to 2007, writing as "m. kingsley." In Sifting the Trash: A History of Design Criticism, Twemlow discusses Kingsley's 2007 SpeakUp post "Rick Poynor: Ipse Dixit"[12] — a response to a Print Magazine column by critic Rick Poynor — as a central episode in a 2007 debate between design bloggers and professional critics, and interviewed Kingsley for the book.[2] His essays on branding and design have also appeared in AIGA's Eye on Design[13] and in Print Magazine.[14] He has also contributed essays to design anthologies edited by Debbie Millman and Steven Heller, including The Essential Principles of Graphic Design (2008),[15] The Education of a Graphic Designer (2015),[16] and The Education of a Design Writer (2025).[17] In 2020, Kingsley and SVA colleague Tom Guarriello, PhD co-founded the BrandBox podcast, which was covered by Print Magazine.[18][19]

Books

[edit]

Kingsley is the author of three books on branding: Universal Principles of Branding (2023, Rockport Publishers / Quarto, ISBN 978-0-7603-7820-5),[20] winner of the 2023 American Graphic Design Award for Book Design from Graphic Design USA; The Pocket Universal Principles of Branding (2025, ISBN 978-0-7603-9382-6), a condensed edition;[21] and Brands in the Age of AI (2025, ISBN 978-0-7603-9521-9), which argues that brands must address the subjectivity of their audiences rather than treat them as transactional objects.[22] It has been translated into Brazilian Portuguese as Marcas em tempos de IA (Editora Olhares, 2025, ISBN 978-6-5609-2076-7), with a preface by Susan Betts, former Senior Director of Brand Strategy at Google and Microsoft.[23][24]

Kingsley also serves as Series Editor of the SVA Masters in Branding book series, published by Quarto in association with the School of Visual Arts, which launched in 2025[25] and comprises three titles: A History of Brands: Origins of Consumer Markets by Richard Shear;[26] The Meaning of Branded Objects: Why Some Things Matter More Than Others by Tom Guarriello, PhD;[27] and Brands in the Age of AI by Kingsley.[28]

Academic work

[edit]

Kingsley has taught in the SVA Masters in Branding program since 2012.[29] From 2021 to 2023, he held the endowed Melbert B. Cary Professorship in Graphic Arts at the Rochester Institute of Technology School of Design.[30] As an SVA faculty advisor, he was part of a year-long student project that designed the graphics for the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, covered by Print Magazine.[31]

Public speaking and media

[edit]

Kingsley gave the closing presentation at the Brand New Conference in Chicago in September 2014[32] and returned to speak there again in October 2023.[33] The Print Magazine Book Club, hosted by Debbie Millman and Steven Heller, featured Kingsley in November 2023 in a conversation about Universal Principles of Branding,[34] and again in October 2025 in a conversation about the SVA Masters in Branding book series, identifying him as the creator of the series.[35] Building on the arguments of Brands in the Age of AI, Kingsley spoke at the NYCxDesign AI Summit in May 2026 alongside representatives from Google DeepMind, Adobe, IBM, and Mastercard.[36] Following the summit, he was interviewed on the podcast That Business of Meaning about his argument that artificial intelligence functions as a condition of contemporary life rather than a discrete tool.[37]
