Marcin Koniorczyk – is a Polish civil engineer, mathematician, and academic teacher. He is a professor of engineering and technical sciences affiliated with Łódź University of Technology. His research specializes in building physics, the durability of construction materials, and the modeling of mass and energy transport processes in porous media.
Biography
[edit]Marcin Koniorczyk graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Silesian University of Technology in 2000. He obtained a Ph.D. in Technical Sciences in the discipline of Civil Engineering in 2005 from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering at Łódź University of Technology, where he also earned his habilitation in 2013. In 2017, he expanded his academic achievements by obtaining a second doctoral degree, this time in Mathematics, awarded by the Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics of Łódź University of Technology.[1][2][3] By decision of the President of the Republic of Poland dated 14 February 2023, he received the title of Professor of Engineering and Technical Sciences in the discipline of Civil Engineering and Transport.[4]
Since 2005, he has been professionally associated with Łódź University of Technology. He has held positions in the Department of Building Materials Physics and Sustainable Design, where he served as Head of the Building Materials Division, and later as Head of the Department of Concrete Structures. He also served as Director of Doctoral Studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering of Łódź University of Technology.[1][2][3]
Scientific and teaching activity
[edit]Marcin Koniorczyk conducts theoretical and experimental analyses of coupled mass and energy transport processes in deformable porous media, with particular emphasis on phase transformations, including water freezing and salt crystallization. His research focuses on the durability and corrosion of cement-based composites and concrete, ceramic products, and the influence of moisture on the mechanical properties of wood. He also investigates methods of protecting construction materials against corrosion, including internal hydrophobization of concrete and hydrophobization of masonry.[1][5]
He is a co-developer of research facilities designed to measure the degradation of porous materials caused by cyclic freezing and salt crystallization. He participated in the development of technologies for the neutralization of medical waste and its incorporation into concrete structures. He also designs computer software for simulating and assessing material durability in corrosive environments.[1]
He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and collaborates with research centers in China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, and Italy.[1] His academic output includes more than 120 scientific publications, including articles published in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) database, such as Construction and Building Materials.[3][6] For two terms he served as Secretary, and currently he is a member of the Building Physics Committee of the Committee for Civil and Hydraulic Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences (KILiW PAN).[7] He is also a member of two technical committees of the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM).[8]
He teaches courses in both Polish- and English-language programmes within the International Faculty of Engineering (IFE) and the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of Łódź University of Technology.[5] He serves as a Ph.D. supervisor and as a supervisor and reviewer of bachelor's and master's theses.
