Mantsinen Group Ltd Oy is a Finnish family-owned company based in Liperi, Finland. The company manufactures material handling equipment, including hydraulic material handlers and cranes, and provides logistics and material handling services. Its equipment is used in ports, terminals, bulk cargo handling, recycling and industrial applications.[2][3]

History

[edit]

Mantsinen was founded in 1963 by brothers Veli and Juhani Mantsinen in North Karelia, Finland. The company grew from a local family business into a manufacturer of material-handling equipment and provider of logistics services with international operations.[3]

Mantsinen expanded its international operations during the 2010s. According to Talouselämä, by 2020 approximately 85–90 percent of the company's equipment sales were generated in export markets.[4][5]

During the 2010s, Mantsinen expanded its range of large hydraulic material handlers for port and bulk cargo operations. A 2017 industry analysis published by World Cargo News described Mantsinen as an expanding competitor in the mobile harbour crane market. The article noted that large hydraulic material handlers from manufacturers such as Mantsinen were increasingly competing with conventional mobile harbour cranes.[6]

In 2018, Mantsinen underwent a generational change in ownership and management. Co-founder Veli Mantsinen transferred his share of the company to his daughters Mia Mantsinen, Meeri Juutilainen and Mervi Mantsinen. Mia Mantsinen continued as chief executive officer and became the company's main owner. At the time, Mantsinen had approximately 500 employees, with operations in Finland and Russia. The company's equipment had been delivered to almost 30 countries, and its distribution network covered approximately 50 countries.[3][7]

In 2019, Mantsinen announced a €12 million investment in its production facilities in Ylämylly, Liperi, Finland. The project included new machining, surface treatment and assembly facilities and office space. According to Talouselämä, the investment was the largest single investment in the company's history at the time.[8]

Divestment of Russian operations

[edit]

Russia was one of Mantsinen's longest-standing export markets. The company had operated in Russia since the 1990s and maintained two Russian subsidiaries: one providing outsourced logistics services, particularly for the forestry industry, and another responsible for importing and distributing Mantsinen equipment and providing related services.[9]

In 2022, International Bulk Journal reported that almost half of Mantsinen's approximately 600 employees worked in Russia and that the Russian operations accounted for approximately 20 percent of the group's annual revenue.[9]

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Mantsinen suspended exports and new equipment orders to Russia and began the process of withdrawing from the country.[9][10]

The divestment of Mantsinen's Russian operations was completed in December 2023. According to Karjalainen, the company subsequently no longer maintained business operations in Russia.[11]

Products

[edit]

Mantsinen manufactures hydraulic material handlers and cranes in several size classes. Its machines are used for handling bulk cargo, containers, scrap metal, timber and other industrial materials.[12]

Mantsinen equipment has been referenced as a case study in research on automation and control systems for material-handling machinery.[13]

Ownership

[edit]

Mantsinen is a family-owned company. Since 2018, the company's principal owners have been Mia Mantsinen, Meeri Juutilainen and Mervi Mantsinen. Mia Mantsinen serves as chief executive officer.[3][7]

In 2020, Mantsinen Group was selected as Finland's Family Business of the Year. The award recognised the company's development as a family-owned business and its international operations.[14]
