Maavilaku
[edit]Maavilaku is a tamil word which translates to lamp (vilaku) made out of rice flour (mav). It is usually made as an offering to Hindu Gods and goddesses for festivals and special occasions.

[edit]The rice flour (ma) is mixed with jaggery and ghee until it binds together and made like small mound. A small hole is made in the center and ghee is poured and a cotton wick is placed in the ghee and is lighted. it is usually offered on Fridays for Hindu goddesses, during Aadi month, the month of purattasi as an offering to Lord Venkatachalapthi. Also some families offer this for their special occasions and also family prayers. The Maavilaku is distributed as prasadham after the prayers.

[edit]The 19th century journal Indian Antiquary contains descriptions of south Indian folk religious practices . it refers to maavilaku as to how Tamil village people worship.[1]
Tamil writer Shanthi Krishnakumar has written about the history and ritual procedure of maavilaku and how it has been orally passed down from one generation to another till date. it also helps in preserving the living Tamil customs which do not have any historical source.[2]
