Levi John Symington BM is an Australian recipient of the Bravery Medal and the Commendation for Brave Conduct. He received the two Australian bravery decorations for separate acts of bravery and was recognised in the 2020 Special Honours and the 2024 Special Honours announced by the Governor-General of Australia.[1] [2]
In 2025, Symington was named a finalist in the Australian Defence Industry Awards in the Technician of the Year category.[3]
Commendation for Brave Conduct
[edit]Symington received the Commendation for Brave Conduct in recognition of his actions during an incident that occurred in Canberra on 24 February 2021.
According to the Governor-General's official media notes, a driver intentionally rammed stationary vehicles before driving towards members of the public. Symington intervened by disabling the vehicle and attempting to prevent the driver from causing further damage to other drivers. Despite the risks posed by the driver's behaviour, aggressive dogs inside the vehicle and smoke issuing from the vehicle, Symington subdued the driver and removed the ignition keys, preventing the vehicle from being driven until police secured the scene.[4]
The incident was also reported by Region Canberra, which described Symington's actions during the confrontation and his subsequent recognition through the Australian Bravery Decorations.[5]
Bravery Medal
[edit]Symington was awarded the Bravery Medal (BM) as part of the 2021 Australian Bravery Decorations for a separate act of bravery.
The Bravery Medal is awarded for acts of bravery performed in hazardous circumstances. The official Australian honours record lists Symington as a recipient of the decoration, with the citation recording the award "for considerable bravery".[6]
The award was announced by the Governor-General of Australia on 31 March 2020 as part of the Australian Bravery Decorations.[7]
Following the announcement, the Office of the Governor-General featured Symington on its official social media channels as one of the recipients of the Bravery Medal.[8]
Recognition
[edit]In 2025, Symington was named a finalist in the Australian Defence Industry Awards in the Technician of the Year category. The awards recognise achievement and excellence across Australia's defence industry.[9]
