Lance Letscher
[edit]Lance Letscher (born in 1962) is an American artist best known for his collages made from "found" materials, such as paper, books, photographs, and other printed materials that are turned into intricate compositions[1][2]. Letscher was born in Austin, Texas and earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin.[3] After graduate school, he worked as an apprentice for printmaker Armado M. Pena Jr., an experience that gave Letscher practical training in color application and production methods. His career began in the late 1980s, starting as a printmaker and conceptual sculptor before turning to collage as his primary craft in the 1990s.[4]
Lance Letscher has been in exhibitions in the United States and internationally, including New York, Paris, Santa Fe, Dallas, Austin, and Jackson Hole.[5] The University of Texas Press published a monograph of his work in 2009, titled Lance Letscher: Collage, that features 118 works from the earlier 2000s.[6] Letscher's work was also the subject of a documentary film released in 2017. The film, The Secret Life of Lance Letscher, directed by Sandra Adair offers a detailed look into the artist's creative works and processes.[7]
Career
[edit]Letcher's early work included sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and installation. His 1989 exhibition Home at N.No.O. Gallery in Dallas featuring Tricycle, Wheelchair and Bed, was reviewed in Artforum. By the late 1990s, Letscher had become associated with cut-paper collage. His 2002 New York exhibition, Someone's Life/Collages and Drawings at the Howard Scott Gallery, was reviewed in The New York Observer and in Art in America.[8][9]
Letscher began exhibiting with Galerie Vidal-Saint Phalle in Paris in 2007, with additional European exhibitions in Brussels, Berlin, Munich, Barcelona, and Paris.
In 2014, Pavel Zoubok Gallery in New York presented Lance Letscher: Real Life Drama. The exhibition included collages Geebee, Happy Poison and a transformed World War II era training glider Hot Rod.
Publications and Film
[edit]In 2009, the University of Texas Press published Lance Letscher: Collage, a monograph on the artist's work. In 2010, Letscher wrote and illustrated The Perfect Machine, a children's book published by the University of Texas.[10]
Letscher is the subject of the 2017 documentary film The Secret Life of Lance Letscher, directed by Sandra Adair. The film premiered at the South By Southwest Film Festival and marked Adair's directorial debut. Reviews described the film as a portrait of an Austin artists known for collages made from pop-culture ephemera and found materials.[11]
Personal Life
[edit]Letscher lives in Austin, Texas with his wife, Mary Frasher, and has two sons from a previous marriage. In a 2017 interview with Psychology Today, Letscher said that his father's death by suicide affected his work, making it "a darker and more expressionistic for a time."[12]
Selected Exhibitions
[edit]The exhibition Books and Parts of Books at the Galveston Arts Center in 2004, traveled to the Austin Museum of Art, Arlington Art Center, and the Art Museum of Southwest Texas. He has also exhibited at the Conduit Gallery in Dallas, Texas, the Tai Modern in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Maya Frodeman Gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
