Konstantinos Chalkias, also known as Kostas Kryptos, is a Greek cryptographer, blockchain engineer, entrepreneur and academic. He is a co-founder and Chief Cryptographer of Mysten Labs, a blockchain unicorn valued at more than $2B in 2022[1].

He is also a dropout from Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and later in the School of Medicine at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, leaving both programs before graduation[5].
Career
[edit]Chalkias started his career as an academic in University of Macedonia and worked in various security, big-data and software-engineering companies, such as Erybo in California and Safemarket in Greece[6]. His career is spanning to more than 20 years in software engineering across the United States, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and Greece[7].
Chalkias worked at R3 along with Mike Hearn (one of the first developers of Bitcoin), where he served as Head of Research and worked on cryptographic components for Corda, an enterprise distributed ledger technology[8]. He later worked at Facebook as a lead cryptographer, where he led teams on Libra, Novi and WhatsApp[9]. In 2021, along with his colleagues at Meta Evan Cheng, Sam Blackshear, Adeniyi Abiodun and George Danezis, Chalkias co-founded Mysten Labs.

[edit]Chalkias's work focuses on applied cryptography, blockchain security, digital signatures, zero-knowledge proofs, authentication, privacy-preserving systems, artificial-intelligence-assisted security analysis and post-quantum cryptography[10]. Inc. Arabia reported that he had published more than 50 scientific papers[11].
Security research and public commentary
[edit]Chalkias has written and spoken publicly about emerging security threats to blockchains, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing and state-backed cybercrime. In an October 2025 opinion article for CoinDesk, he argued that the cryptocurrency industry should treat artificial intelligence and quantum computing as strategic security risks and begin upgrading infrastructure toward post-quantum cryptography and AI-aware security models[12]. In a separate October 2025 CoinDesk article on North Korean cyber operations, Chalkias was quoted on the use of large language models for blockchain code analysis, reconnaissance, phishing and exploit replication. The article described his view that AI posed a more immediate threat to blockchain security than quantum computing, particularly because AI tools can be used to scan codebases, identify vulnerabilities and reproduce exploits across multiple blockchain systems[13]. In May 2026, the Financial Times quoted Chalkias in an article on the crypto industry's preparations for quantum-computing risks, identifying him as chief cryptographer at Mysten Labs[14].
Recognition
[edit]In December 2024, Inc. Arabia included Chalkias in The GCC's Tech Vanguard, a special feature celebrating 30 innovators in the Gulf region's technology sector[15][16].
