Komarpant Metri (Kannada: ಮೇತ್ರಿ, Devanagari: मेत्री) is a surname found among the Komarpant community in coastal Karnataka and Goa.[1][2]
Overview
[edit]The Komarpant (also recorded as Komarpaik and Komarpanth) is a community mainly living in the coastal Konkan region, including the areas around Karwar in present-day Karnataka and some parts of Goa.[3]
There are published accounts of the community where Metri is one of the surnames listed with families of Komarpant, and examples of such surnames including Naik, Pujari, Phondekar and Belurkar.[4]
According to the Bombay Gazetteer, men of the Komarpaik community integrated the words naik or metri into their names, and metri is described as meaning "headman".[5]
Official recognition
[edit]The Komarpant community is also listed in the Central List of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), issued by Government of India.[6] The community is part of the other backward classes list category-2(A) in Karnataka.[7] It is also designated Other Backward Class in Goa.[8]
Geographical distribution
[edit]It is a surname which has been found amongst Komarpant families in coastal Karnataka and Goa, especially around areas associated with the Komarpant community.[9]
