Kestra is an open-source workflow orchestration platform released under the Apache License 2.0. It allows users to define, schedule, and run workflows using a declarative YAML syntax, and supports the execution of tasks written in several programming languages.[1][2]
The software is developed by Kestra Technologies, co-founded in 2021 by Emmanuel Darras and Ludovic Dehon.[1]
History
[edit]Kestra Technologies was co-founded by Emmanuel Darras and Ludovic Dehon. The software was released as open source in 2021 under the Apache License 2.0, with its source code hosted on GitHub.[1] It was initially developed to address the data-flow orchestration needs of the French retailer Leroy Merlin, where it was deployed in production.[3]
The platform is positioned as an alternative to existing data orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, Prefect, and Dagster.[1]
In October 2023, the company raised a $3 million pre-seed round.[1] In September 2024, Kestra raised an $8 million seed round led by Alven.[4][5] In March 2026, the company announced a $25 million Series A funding round led by RTP Global, bringing its total funding to $36 million.[6][7]
Design
[edit]Kestra workflows, called flows, are defined in YAML files. Each flow specifies a namespace, an identifier, a list of tasks, and optional triggers.[1] Tasks can run code written in various programming languages, including Python, JavaScript, R, and shell scripts, through plugins.[1]
The platform supports scheduled execution as well as event-driven triggers, including triggers based on Apache Kafka messages, webhook calls, and cloud storage events.[2] The server is written in Java and can be deployed as a standalone process for local use, or as a distributed system using a relational database and object storage.[2]
In addition to the open-source edition, Kestra offers a commercial enterprise edition.[1]
