Kang Quintus (born 17 September 1987)[1] is a Cameroonian actor, film director, screenwriter and producer.[2][3] He is known for producing and starring in The Fisherman's Diary (2020), one of the first Cameroonian feature films to be acquired by Netflix for international distribution,[4] and Nganù (2023).
Early life and career
[edit]Kang Quintus was born on 17 September 1987 in Wum,[5] in the North-West Region of Cameroon. Quintus studied at the University of Buea in Cameroon.[6] He later moved to Nigeria before continuing his studies in Antwerp, Belgium, where he completed a double master's degree and a PhD. After finishing his studies, he returned to Cameroon to pursue long-term projects in the country's film industry.[7]
Quintus began his screen career with the film Ekei (2014). He went on to write, direct, and act in Rejected (2015), and later appeared in Retaliation, Reverse, Jason, Reach, and BedFellas.[1]
He gained wider recognition with The Fisherman's Diary (2020), a drama in which he played Solomon and also produced. The film screened at international festivals and was among the first Cameroonian films released on Netflix.[8][9][10] Quintus was appointed a brand ambassador for Orange Cameroun in 2021.[11][12] Two years later, his production company, Kang Quintus Films, became a Netflix content aggregator for select African productions.[13][14]
In 2023, Quintus wrote, co-produced, and directed the drama film ''Nganù'', in which he also played the title character alongside Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Muriel Blanche, and Azah Melvine. It was released on Netflix on 7 November 2023.[15] ''Nganù'' won Best Feature Film at the 14th Eko International Film Festival in Lagos, Nigeria, in April 2024, and Quintus won Best Actor for his performance in the title role. The awards followed the film's earlier release on Netflix.[16]
Quintus wrote, directed, and produced the 2025 film ''Mabanda''. The film stars Nchini Sylvia-Bright Bih, Precious Nana Tchouadem, Ngwa Bernard, and Quintus himself, and centers on grief, abuse, resilience, and survival. It premiered in Cameroon before screening at several international film festivals.[17] In 2026, ''Mabanda'' won the inaugural award for Best Indigenous Language Film (Central Africa) at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA), the first Cameroonian film to win in that category.[18][19][20]
Business ventures
[edit]In 2022 Quintus opened Lions Gate, a hospitality complex in Douala, Cameroon's economic capital.[21][22]
