Jurgen Rehm is a German-Canadian epidemiologist and addiction researcher whose work focuses on alcohol[1] and other substance use[2], population health, health policy, and the burden of substance-related disease.[3][4] He is a Senior Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto and a professor at the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health. He was the inaugural Chair of Addiction Policy at the University of Toronto.[5] He is the recipient of European Addiction Research Award[6] and Jellinek Award.[7]

Education and career

[edit]

Rehm studied psychology and methodology at the University of Mannheim in Germany, where he received a PhD.[8]

He has been associated with the University of Toronto[9], the University of Hamburg[10], and Technische Universität Dresden. At TU Dresden, he headed an epidemiological research unit within the Institute of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy. [11]

At CAMH, Rehm is a Senior Scientist in the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research and the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute.[9] He has also served as Director of the Social and Epidemiological Research Department.[12]

At the University of Toronto, Rehm is a professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and has held the inaugural Chair of Addiction Policy.[5]

Research

[edit]

Rehm's research has primarily concerned the epidemiology and public-health consequences of alcohol and other substance use.[13] He has studied alcohol-attributable mortality, morbidity, injuries, and disability-adjusted life years at national, regional, and global levels, including differences by age, sex, geography, consumption patterns, and socioeconomic status.[14]

His work has examined the global burden of disease attributable to alcohol, as well as alcohol-control policies such as taxation, drinking guidelines, and other regulatory measures.[15] He has also studied associations between alcohol use and liver disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and injuries.[16]
