Jump Space is an cooperative PvE video game developed and published by a Swedish company called Keepsake Games. It was released in early access in September 2025 on the Steam storefront and Xbox consoles.[3]
In Jump Space, players transition seamlessly between crewing the ship and exploring on foot, including spacewalk. Engage in battle both on the ground and in space. As a survivor of the group called “The Resistance Coalition”, players must scavenge through territory and planets each round to thin enemy forces, rescue survivor ships, and collect weapons, gear, and spare parts to upgrade until taking down the enemy mothership before returning to base.
Gameplay
[edit]Jump Space is a cooperative player versus environment (PvE) video game for up to four players in first-person perspective. The story is set in a sci-fi deep space setting, where the player will play as a survivor of a resistance group fighting against cybernetic enemies. To achieve their goal, survivors engage in a continuous cycle of space navigation, ship management, and planet exploration. Throughout the path, resistors need to pilot the ship through hazards. Upon arriving at a destination, the game experience switches from space combat to on-foot combat to complete the main mission. After battling the enemies and gathering valuable salvage, survivors return to the ship and go back to base, where they use these resources to upgrade the ship and personal gear, preparing players for the next mission.
The game does not have specific roles, allowing players to dynamically adapt and exchange classes such as piloting, engineering, controlling turrets, and ground deployment; roles will be switched simultaneously depending on the immediate situational need of the ship. In solo mode, players will be accompanied by a robotic AI assistant named “Buddy,” who can be assigned to help you using defensive turrets or maintenance and internal repair.[4]
Jump Space has over 50 playable sectors across four unlockable regions of the galaxy, and the game uses "sector" to mean a level. Missions are spread across different sectors and range in difficulty from easy to very hard. A mission can run through several consecutive jumps, and longer ones can reach eight jumps and last around half an hour.[5]
The levels are handcrafted but include randomized elements. According to the developers, there are desert planets, ice planets, asteroids and moon-like areas, and roughly half of all levels take place on planets. The rest are set in space, where players fight ship to ship, scan for points of interest, and board enemy vessels.[6]
Early Access launched with nine mission types. They include scavenging operations and escort missions, and players have also mentioned artillery support. The developers' roadmap plans more sectors, mission types and sector modifiers, plus an endless mode, in later chapters.[7]
Development
[edit]Jump Space was developed by Keepsake Games, a Swedish independent studio founded by veterans from Hazelight, Mojang and Coffee Stain. The game was first revealed in 2024 under the title Jump Ship. In June 2025 it was featured in Steam Next Fest, where more than 500,000 players tried the demo, which ranked among the three most-played demos of the event. Following the demo, the game passed one million wishlists on Steam.[8]
In August 2025, the game was renamed Jump Space. Game director and co-founder Filip Coulianos said the studio was contacted by someone who held the trademark rights to "Jump Ship" and had to change the name. Keepsake's CEO, Daniel Kaplan, said at the time that the new title better reflected the growing scope and ambition of the project. On August 22, the developer announced a September 19 early access release date for Windows (via Steam) and Xbox Series X/S.[8]
Jump Space launched in early access on September 19, 2025. The game reached 250,000 players over its opening weekend. The developer published a roadmap of three content updates ("chapters") for the early access period. The first major update added hangar vendors, more sectors and sector modifiers. An October 2025 patch let players spend earned credits on gear from vendors. The Augmented Update, released in December 2025, added an augmentation system of equippable player perks. A large summer 2026 update added a new ship, the Hammerhead, along with changes to looting and weapon customization.[9]
To mark the game's first anniversary, Keepsake released an anniversary update with difficulty changes and new enemy tiers and ran a free weekend on Steam from September 17 to 21, 2026. The studio said the game had sold more than 900,000 units by that point.[10][11]
