Judson Althoff (born 1972) is an American business executive who has served as chief executive officer of Microsoft's commercial business since October 2025.[1][2][3][4][5] He leads the company's commercial organization, covering product strategy, sales, marketing and operations, which accounts for roughly three quarters of Microsoft's revenue.[3][6] He joined Microsoft in 2013 and previously held sales leadership roles at Oracle Corporation and EMC Corporation.[7][8]

Early life and education

[edit]

Althoff is a native of Ohio.[2][7] He has credited his mother, a mathematics teacher and debate coach, with instilling an early emphasis on discipline and academics.[9]

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, graduating in 1995.[9][4][10] He returned to the university as commencement speaker in 2015, and in 2017 received the Illinois Tech Alumni Association's Professional Achievement Award.[10]

Career

[edit]

EMC Corporation

[edit]

Prior to Microsoft, Althoff worked at EMC and Oracle. At EMC Corporation, he was a district sales manager overseeing a direct and indirect sales team.[9]

Oracle Corporation

[edit]

Althoff spent 14 years at Oracle Corporation, which he joined from EMC, remaining with the company until 2013.[7][8] Early in his tenure he served as director of e-business solutions, responsible for developing next-generation enterprise applications, and later headed the Oracle Technology Channel Program Office, where he developed go-to-market initiatives for midsize businesses.[9]

He held leadership roles spanning global alliances, channels and embedded sales, including vice president of global platform and distribution sales and, from 2008, group vice president of worldwide alliances and channels.[11][8] He took over Oracle's top channel role in 2008 and spent his final five years at the company as senior vice president of worldwide alliances, channels and embedded sales, leading its worldwide indirect and embedded sales.[8][7]

Writing in 2011, CRN described Althoff as providing the execution behind president Mark Hurd's strategy of moving Oracle toward the channel, and reported that partners credited him with shifting the company from a direct-sales-dominated software business to a partner-engaged one.[9] By late 2011 Althoff oversaw a channel organization of roughly 2,500 staff and a partner network of approximately 22,000.[12][9][13]

Microsoft

[edit]

Althoff joined Microsoft in March 2013 as president of Microsoft North America, leading sales and marketing across the United States and Canada.[1][7][8][14]

His role later expanded to include leadership of Microsoft's worldwide commercial business and its global sales and marketing organization.[15][6] He led Microsoft Customer and Partner Solutions, the company's commercial sales and marketing organization, for nine years before his 2025 promotion.[2][16]

In October 2025, Microsoft named Althoff chief executive officer of its commercial business as part of a restructuring of the company's senior leadership.[1][2][17][18] Chief executive Satya Nadella said that bringing operations into the commercial business would tighten the feedback loop between what customers need and how Microsoft delivers and supports them, and that the change would allow him and Microsoft's engineering leaders to focus on technical work including datacenter buildout, systems architecture, AI science and product innovation.[2][19]

Board memberships

[edit]

Althoff has served as an independent director on the board of Ecolab since February 2024, and is a member of the company's Finance Committee and its Safety, Health and Environment Committee.[4][19][20] In June 2026 he joined the board of directors of GE Aerospace.[21][20]

Public speaking

[edit]

Althoff has delivered keynote presentations at Microsoft-hosted events. In November 2025 he gave the opening keynote at Microsoft Ignite.[16][5]
