John Joseph Dowling Jr., known professionally as John Dowling, is an American visual artist, filmmaker, photographer, and author.

Career

[edit]

Photography

[edit]

Dowling worked for four decades as a photojournalist and fine-art photographer. Redwood Art Group has described him as "a preeminent photojournalist and fine art photographer" whose subjects included celebrities, models, politicians, executives, wildlife, and landscapes.[1]

Visual art

[edit]

Dowling creates abstract digital paintings, including the collection "A Miracle in the Making." His works are built from layered photographic montages, with individual pieces also assembled into large-scale composite installations.[1]

In April 2022, Dowling was named a Spotlight Artist at Artexpo New York, held April 7–10 at Pier 36 in Manhattan.[1][2] In July 2022, his work premiered at the Hamptons Fine Art Fair. Coverage of the premiere reported that his work had drawn the attention of celebrities including Muhammad Ali, Tina Louise, Patti Duke, Billy Joel, Taylor Swift, and Hulk Hogan.[3] Redwood Art Group reported that he began painting digitally as art therapy while recovering from a serious illness.[1]

Filmmaking

[edit]

In 2006, Dowling co-directed and produced the family comedy film A Merry Little Christmas (also known as The Town That Banned Christmas) alongside Karl Fink. The film starred Matt McCoy, Jane Sibbett, Adam Ferrara, and Carol Alt, and was filmed in Greenlawn, Centerport, Northport, and East Northport on Long Island.[4][5] It was an official selection of the Long Island International Film Expo in 2006, where Ferrara won the festival's Best Actor award.[5]

Writing and publishing

[edit]

Dowling is the author of the novel Chapters of Love: Chasing Sunrise (2017).[6] He is also the publisher of Model Citizens Magazine.
