Jake Troyli (born 1990) is an American artist. Based in Brooklyn, New York, his practice explores themes such as the performance of identity, and the fluidity of selfhood within systems of spectacle and labor.
Early life and education
[edit]Jake Troyli was born in 1990 in Boston, Massachusetts, to a single mother, Ka-Rim Troyli. The grew up in Saint Petersburg, Florida after moving there when he was 8. He began drawing at a young age, selling comic-strip illustrations to peers in sixth grade, and later developed a satirical visual language influenced by Mad Magazine.
Troyli received a scholarship to play Division 1 collegiate basketball at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, before receiving his B.A. from Lincoln Memorial University (2013), and his M.F.A. from the University of South Florida (2019). He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2019).
Career
[edit]Troyli mainly makes oil paintings, employing classical techniques such as underpainting and glazing. and visual motifs drawn from Northern Renaissance and High Renaissance art, blending them with pop and comedic elements to stage theatrical tableaux that explore identity, code-switching, and the social gaze. He frequently positions himself as an “elastic avatar,” morphing across roles that blur subject and spectacle.
Troyli is represented by Monique Meloche Gallery, located in Chicago, IL.
Solo exhibitions include moniquemeloche, Chicago, IL (2024, 2022); Tempus Projects, Tampa, FL (2018); and ArtsXchange, St. Petersburg, FL (2018).
Troyli’s work is currently included in the group exhibition Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture, curated by Jennifer Dunlop Fletcher, Seph Rodney, and Katy Siegel, at SFMoMA, which travels to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Troyli’s work has been featured in group exhibitions at Perrotin Gallery, New York, NY (2024); Galerie Droste, Düsseldorf, DE (2024); Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI (2023-24); Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY (2023); Galerie Droste, Paris, FR (2021); The Ringling Museum, Sarasota, FL (2021); Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa, FL (2019); San Francisco Art Institute, CA (2018).
