IVAN ZAHARIEV
Ivan Zahariev is an Australian/Bulgarian dual national of partial Vietnamese background who arrested in Sofia Bulgarian on the 20th of September 2016 and charged with training in order to fight in the then ongoing war in Syria. Zahariev was tried in the controversial and later abolished Specialized Criminal Court in Sofia Bulgaria, the trial attracted widespread attention from both the Bulgarian and Australian press at the time. Zahariev was sentenced to four years in prison in June of 2017 although this was later reduced to 2 and a half years on appeal he was freed from prison in November of 2018.
EARLY LIFE
Zahariev was born in Hanoi Vietnam on the 23/05/1995 the son of a Bulgarian father and Vietnamese mother, the family then moved to Canberra and then Sydney Australia in 1996 and 1998 respectively. Zahariev grew up in the inner west area of Sydney and attended Waverley College during his high school years subsequently graduating in 2012 it was reported in media articles that he was an average student who was well liked in school although he reportedly had never been in any relationship during his high school years.
CONVERSION TO ISLAM
Zahariev is reported to have converted to Islam during his final year of high school in 2012, he quickly became an active member of the community joining the street dawah group which was very active in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta in the early 2010s. Zahariev was also a member of an informal sharia police force which was active in Western Sydney and known for forbidding Muslims from public sinning especially with drinking alcohol and Muslim men talking to non related female members of the public.
Zahariev was an enthusiastic Muslim who was a very active member of the community and as a result became well known in Western Sydney he was known to engage in fiery social media debates with members of the community and with non Muslims too.
