InvestEngine is a British financial services company based in London, United Kingdom. It was founded in 2016 and launched in 2019 and operates an electronic trading platform in the UK.[5]
The platform offers commission-free investing and specializes in exchange-traded funds (ETFs). InvestEngine currently serves customers in the United Kingdom and is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) under firm reference number 801128.[6]
History
[edit]InvestEngine was co-founded by Andrey Dobrynin and Gumtree founder Simon Crookall.[7] The two met when Crookall was expanding Gumtree's classified ads model into Eastern Europe and Dobrynin joined, eventually becoming Managing Director of Slando.[8]
In 2019, InvestEngine launched their first product, which was a robo-advisor.[7] However, a combination of customer feedback and the desire to offer more control over one's investment strategy led them to expand into a hybrid product.[5] In 2021, InvestEngine launched a DIY portfolio. Following that, they expanded into offering a range of investment and pension accounts.
Business Model
[edit]At its inception, InvestEngine identified itself as a "platform for the long term investors in the UK" that filled a middle ground between speculative trading and robo-advisors.[8] Currently, the platform only offers ETFs available within popular UK Tax wrapper accounts such as a Self-invested personal pension (SIPP) and Individual savings account (ISA).[9] InvestEngine also operates a Business Investing product for Sole traders and Small and medium enterprises to invest surplus company cash in ETFs.[10]
InvestEngine operates a commission-free model for its trading services, meaning that clients are not charged commission for holding assets on the platform. Following a 2024 fee increase by Vanguard, InvestEngine reported onboarding more than 5,000 ISAs and surpassing £1 billion in AUM, in part due to their competitive costs.[11]
According to InvestEngine, they primarily generate income from uninvested cash and reduce expenses via automation and single-window trading.[12] At one point, InvestEngine offered a managed ETF portfolio service at a fee, but new enrolments have since been paused.[13] Given that they are also a lower cost investment, InvestEngine is able to reduce costs by only offering ETFs to their customers.[14]
Operations
[edit]InvestEngine has received their funding both from private investors and by crowdfunding on Crowdcube. They have completed two rounds of fundraising totalling £3,739,317 from 2,153 investors: in June 2022 InvestEngine raised £1,304,879 from 1,120 investors, followed by £2,434,439 from 1,033 in March 2023.[15] Other investors in the platform include Luke Tobin.[16] InvestEngine's latest fundraise was €2.0m in August 2025.[16]
InvestEngine is currently only available in the United Kingdom and is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) under firm reference number 801128.[6]
Co-founder Andrey Dobrynin currently serves as CEO of InvestEngine.[17] In July 2026, InvestEngine appointed Matt Gatrell, who previously served as CEO for fintech Nutmeg as their first Non-Executive Director.[18]
InvestEngine was featured on the 2026 Sifted 100: UK and Ireland, which ranks the fasted-growing startups and scaleups of the region by the past three financial years' revenue growth.[16] The platform remains private, independent, and headquartered in the UK, while exhibiting accelerating revenue growth.[16]
