Inland Knights are a British house music DJ and production duo from Nottingham, England, consisting of Laurence Ritchie and Andy Riley. Active since 1998, they are known for their deep, groove-laden style of house music and for founding the independent record label Drop Music. Both members emerged from the Smokescreen Sound System, one of the longest-running free party collectives in the United Kingdom.
Background
[edit]Ritchie and Riley both became involved in the UK free party scene through the Smokescreen Sound System, founded in Sheffield in 1991.[1] Originally based in Sheffield, Smokescreen expanded its activities across the English Midlands over the following years, running free parties and club nights across Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby, Derbyshire, and Lincolnshire most weekends throughout the early to mid 1990s.[1] In 1993, Smokescreen launched its first regular club night at the Lo Club in Derby, and by 1994–95 the sound system was at its peak, attracting hundreds of people to parties and club nights each weekend.[1]
Smokescreen was active during a politically charged period for the UK free party scene, organising a series of events called "All Systems No" (later "All Systems Go") in response to the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which criminalised gatherings characterised by repetitive beats.[1] The sound system also participated in the subsequent Criminal Justice Act demonstrations in London alongside fellow Midlands collective DiY.[1]
Riley joined Smokescreen as a DJ in 1993. In 1998, he and fellow Smokescreen founder member Laurence Ritchie formed Inland Knights and a sound that founded the Drop Music label, described in an academic account as going on to become "one of the most highly regarded house labels of the 21st century".[1] Smokescreen has continued to operate, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022 with a series of events across the UK and Europe, and remains active as of 2026.[1] The sound system also gave rise to another house duo, The Littlemen, who are based in Nottingham and have released on labels including their own Smokescreen Recordings.[2]
Career
[edit]Following their debut release, Inland Knights built a prolific discography of original productions and remixes, releasing tracks on labels including 20:20 Vision, NRK, OM Records, Panhandle Records, Vista, Siesta, Sunflower, Low Pressings, and Miguel Campbell's Outcross Recordings.[3] Their music has been licensed to several notable compilations, including the Global Underground series.[3]
The duo developed an extensive international touring schedule, performing at clubs and festivals across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Turkey, Chile, the United States, and Russia.[3] Major venues included Fabric and The End in London, Back 2 Basics in Leeds, Amnesia in Ibiza, Dance Valley in the Netherlands, and Tomorrowland in Belgium.[3]
Inland Knights recorded a guest mix for BBC Radio 1's long-running Essential Mix programme, one of the most prestigious slots in electronic dance music broadcasting.[4]
In 2023–2024, to mark Drop Music's 25th anniversary, Inland Knights released a three-part vinyl retrospective series. All three releases reached the top of the site-wide charts on Juno Records.[4] Around the same period, producer and DJ Fleur Shore named the duo as her heroes on BBC Radio 1's Heroes segment, inviting them to remix a track from her Undergrowth label. Inland Knights subsequently performed an exclusive one-hour set on the station.[4] NTS Radio DJ Peach also dedicated a one-hour programme exclusively to Inland Knights productions.[4]
Drop Music
[edit]Drop Music is an independent house music label founded by the music of Inland Knights in 1998 and based in Nottingham, England. The label has released music by the duo alongside other artists, and in 2023–2024 celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special vinyl series.[4]
