IONETIC is a British battery pack technology company based in Brackley, Northamptonshire, that designs and manufactures custom electric vehicle (EV) battery packs for niche and low-volume vehicle manufacturers. The company was founded in January 2022 by James Eaton and Dr. Monica Marinescu, both from Imperial College London.
IONETIC's core product is "Arc", a software-accelerated, AI-assisted platform for designing and manufacturing bespoke battery packs, which the company says can cut development costs by up to 90 percent and halve time-to-market compared with conventional in-house battery development.[1][2] In 2025 the company opened a £5 million pilot production facility, "Arc Fab Pilot", in Brackley, which also serves as its global headquarters.[3][4]
History
[edit]The company was founded by James Eaton, with Monica Marinescu, a senior lecturer in Imperial's battery group, and began trading as a consultancy in January 2022 before pivoting within weeks to develop an end-to-end battery pack design and manufacturing business.
IONETIC launched its "Arc" battery pack design platform in September 2022.[2] In April 2023, the company announced the appointment of Andy Palmer, the former Aston Martin chief executive and Nissan chief operating officer, as its chairman.[5][6]
In April 2024, IONETIC was awarded a Faraday Institution Entrepreneurial Fellowship to support further development of its battery pack technology, and separately led a Faraday Battery Challenge-funded project (BESTBUS) in collaboration with Imperial College London and bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis.[7][8] In May 2024, IONETIC announced a multi-year global partnership with Rockwell Automation to support its manufacturing and digital-twin capabilities.[9]
In February 2025, the company opened its "Arc Fab Pilot" production facility, a 5,000 sq ft site in Brackley, Northamptonshire, representing a £5 million investment and serving as IONETIC's global headquarters and industrialisation centre.[3][10] The following month, the company appointed Stevie (Stephen) Boulter, a former Jaguar Land Rover battery engineer and VP of Engineering at Agratas, as Chief Technology Officer.[11]
By 2025, IONETIC had delivered battery pack programmes for customers across the automotive, marine and commercial vehicle sectors, including publicly disclosed work with bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis and electric raceboat maker Seabird Technologies.[12]
Technology
[edit]IONETIC describes its core offering as "Arc", an integrated network of software tools, hardware components and fabrication technologies used to design, build and industrialise custom battery packs.[13] In October 2024, the company unveiled an updated, AI-supported version of Arc, which it described as a "world-first" software-accelerated battery pack development system.[1]
The company's battery packs are used across automotive (including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles), bus, commercial and off-highway, and marine applications, targeting original equipment manufacturers producing between roughly 100 and 10,000 vehicles per year.[14]
Leadership
[edit]IONETIC is led by chief executive and co-founder James Eaton, who oversees the company's technical and commercial functions.[15] Co-founder Monica Marinescu, an associate professor at Imperial College London, serves as Chief Science Officer.[15] Andy Palmer, formerly of Nissan and Aston Martin, has served as Chairman since April 2023.[5] Other leadership includes Stephen Large, formerly of Jaguar Land Rover, as Chief Operating Officer, and Stevie Boulter as Chief Technology Officer, also formerly of Jaguar Land Rover.[15][11]
