Hostelworld Group plc is an Irish online travel agency specialising in hostel and budget accommodation bookings. Founded in Dublin in 1999 under the name Web Reservations International, the company operates a website and mobile application available in 19 languages, through which users can search and book hostels, hotels, and bed and breakfasts in more than 180 countries.[1][2] The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange (ticker: HSW) and headquartered in Dublin, Ireland.[3]

History

Founding and early development

Hostelworld was founded in Dublin in 1999 by Ray Nolan and Tom Kennedy, operating initially under the name Web Reservations International (WRI). The company developed a platform enabling confirmed, prepaid online bookings at hostels, introducing real-time inventory management and instant confirmation to the budget accommodation sector.[1][4] The company was subsequently rebranded as Hostelworld in the early 2000s.[2][5]

Private equity ownership and IPO

In 2009, private equity firm Hellman & Friedman acquired a majority stake in the company from its founders for approximately €202.5 million.[6] On 2 November 2015, Hostelworld Group plc listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange and, secondarily, on the Irish Stock Exchange. The IPO valued the company at approximately €245 million and raised net proceeds of approximately €173.6 million.[3][6][7] Following the IPO, Hellman & Friedman retained approximately 19.8% of the issued ordinary share capital.[7]

Social features (2022)

In 2022, Hostelworld introduced social features to its platform, including group messaging spaces tied to specific properties or cities, traveller profiles, and a system of user-created and hostel-hosted events. According to the company's 2026 AGM statement, messaging volumes had grown 81% year-on-year by 2025, and users who engaged with social features booked approximately twice as frequently as those who did not.[8]

Acquisition of OccasionGenius (2025)

In October 2025, Hostelworld acquired OccasionGenius Inc., a US-based B2B event discovery company, for a total cash consideration of $12 million. OccasionGenius, founded in 2016 and based in Richmond, Virginia, provides an API-based global event dataset. The acquisition was funded through a three-year term loan facility with Allied Irish Banks.[9][10][11]

Hostelworld's platform allows users to search, compare, and book hostels, hotels, and bed and breakfasts across more than 180 countries. More than 80% of listed properties are independent, owner-operated businesses, and approximately 66% have 50 beds or fewer.[1]

Mobile application

Hostelworld launched its first iPhone application in January 2010, with an Android version following shortly after.[12] In July 2014, the company launched a native iPad application.[13] According to company results published in 2025, app bookings grew 16% year-on-year in 2024, with more than a third of all bookings completed through the application.[14]

HOSCAR Awards

Hostelworld operates the annual HOSCAR Awards, which recognise hostel properties based on verified guest reviews submitted through the platform. Award categories are divided by property size — Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large — with regional sub-categories, as well as thematic categories including Responsible Travel Awards.

Climate commitments

In 2021, Hostelworld set targets for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in accordance with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) criteria. In 2023, the company became a signatory of The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.[15][16] In 2024, the company set near-term and long-term targets for its Scope 3 emissions, targeting a 37.5% reduction by 2035 and a 90% reduction by 2040 relative to a 2023 baseline.

Staircase to Sustainability

In partnership with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), Hostelworld developed the Staircase to Sustainability framework to assist hostel partners in reviewing and improving their sustainability practices. The framework is structured around four pillars — Sustainability Management, Socio-Economic Impact, Cultural Impact, and Environmental Impact — and four levels of progression, with the highest level requiring certification by a GSTC-accredited body.[17][18]

Global Tourism Plastics Initiative

In 2020, Hostelworld became a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI), led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.[19][20]
