Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) is an international interior design firm specialising in hospitality design. The firm was founded in 1965 by Howard Hirsch and Michael Bedner in California and later expanded internationally, establishing offices in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.[2][3]
History

[edit]Hirsch Bedner Associates was founded in California in 1965 by interior designers Howard Hirsch and Michael Bedner. The partnership developed from Hirsch's practice, with Bedner becoming a partner in the newly established firm.[2]
Contemporary coverage of the firm in Designers West documented Hirsch's work and the development of Hirsch/Bedner Associates during the firm's early period. A March 1984 feature described the firm's hospitality work and[4][5] its activities in the United States and Asia.[4]
By the mid-1980s, the firm had developed an international practice. In 1986, Interior Design reported that Hirsch/Bedner & Associates was headquartered in Santa Monica and had branch operations in Atlanta and Hong Kong. The firm employed 165 professionals at the time, with a growing proportion of its commissions coming from outside the United States.[5]
International expansion
[edit]HBA's international expansion began in Asia. In 1978, the firm opened an office in Hong Kong, its first branch outside the United States.[6][7] Independent coverage in Designers West also documented the firm's Hong Kong operations and growing involvement in Asian hospitality projects during the 1980s.[4]
The firm's work in Asia expanded during the 1980s. In 2014, China Daily reported that HBA had established a Hong Kong office during the 1970s and had subsequently worked on hotel projects in China, including the White Swan Hotel in Guangzhou, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and the renovation of the Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai.[8]
HBA subsequently expanded its international network beyond Asia. A study of the globalisation of architectural firms identifies HBA as a United States-founded hospitality design firm established in 1965 and notes that it established 24 offices internationally during the two decades preceding the study, beginning with offices in London and Hong Kong, and completed projects in 80 countries.[9]
The firm's global headquarters are located in Singapore.[10]
Recognition
[edit]Howard Hirsch was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1986. The recognition cited his contribution to interior design and his leadership of Hirsch/Bedner & Associates, which had developed a substantial international hospitality practice by that time.[5]
Forbes listed HBA as one of the one hundred "America’s Top Hospitality Architects & Designers" in 2025.[11]
In 2026, Interior Design ranked HBA International first in its Hospitality category as part of its annual Giants of Design rankings. The ranking is based on design-fee earnings reported through the publication's annual industry survey.[12]
