In August 2025, a film package written by Jaime Oliveira was put together at Chernin Entertainment with James Mangold directing and Timothée Chalamet starring. The project was based on a short story also written by Oliveira.[1] Later that month, Paramount Pictures acquired the distribution rights to the film. This marked the first acquisition of Paramount's mere hours following the conclusion of the Skydance merger.[2] In September 2025, it was announced that Mangold had just secured a deal to "develop, direct and produce feature film projects" with Paramount, starting with High Side starring Chalamet. When asked by Io9 on whether this would affect the production of the Star Wars prequel film about the Jedi he was developing for Lucasfilm or the DC Universe (DCU) film about the Swamp Thing he was developing for DC Studios, Mangold's representatives confirmed that he still "remain[ed] attached and available to develop all his other projects".[3]
