Comment: Just as a pointer, there are four criteria that a source needs to meet to show notability: it must be a secondary source (so things like registers of companies won't count), reliable, independent (not connected to Hibret Insurance), and it must have significant coverage, which is to say that it actually talks about Hibret Insurance as more than just a passing mention. Hibret Insurance Share Company (formerly The United Insurance Company S.C.) is an Ethiopian financial services institution headquartered in Addis Ababa.[1] Established in November 1994, it was among the pioneer group of private underwriting firms created following the re-licensing of private financial institutions under Proclamation No. 86/1994.[2][3]
History
[edit]Following the deregulation of Ethiopia's financial sector in 1994, the company was established on November 10, 1994, by 87 founding shareholders as The United Insurance Company S.C.[1] In 1997, it expanded into individual life insurance underwriting.[4]
In late 2000, United Insurance completed a corporate merger with Lion Insurance Company S.C., representing an early consolidation deal within Ethiopia's modern private financial industry.[4][5] The company later rebranded as Hibret Insurance Share Company to align its corporate identity with its affiliate, Hibret Bank.[1]
The firm's corporate governance and organizational structure have been analyzed in published management studies evaluating private underwriting operations in Addis Ababa.[6]
Operations
[edit]Hibret Insurance operates general, life, and Takaful insurance underwriting through a nationwide branch network in Ethiopia.[1] The company also holds equity investments in financial sector infrastructure, including Hibret Bank, Ethiopian Reinsurance Share Company (Ethio Re), and the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX).[7]
