Herstelle (German pronunciation: [ˈheːɐ̯ˌʃtɛlə] ⓘ) is a village on the left bank of the Weser in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Etymology
[edit]The earliest mentions of Herstelle appear in 797, in multiple different annals, as an army camp of the Frankish King Charlemagne. It is stated that Charlemagne himself ordered for the camp's naming. It appears with various different spellings including Heristelli, Haristalli, and Niwi Haristalli. It is widely believed that Herstelle is named after Charlemagne's own ancestral home of Herstal. One theory suggests that the reason for this may be because of the topographical similarities between the river valley of the Meuse near Herstal and Weser near Herstelle.[1]
The name Niwi Haristalli then would mean "New Herstal". Herstal itself consists of the elements hari ("army") and stal ("camp"). The full meaning of Herstelle, as New Herstal, would be "New Army Camp".[2]

[edit]Herstelle is located on the southern (left) bank of the river Weser, in the Weser Uplands. On the opposite bank lies the village of Würgassen and the Hannoversche Klippen.
To the east, the Diemel flows into the Weser in the town of Bad Karlshafen.[3]
