Hermitcraft, also written as HermitCraft, is a invite-only survival multiplayer (SMP) Minecraft server and web series that is known for the large-scale builds and redstone projects that its members create.[2][3][4] Members, known as "Hermits", are also known to get involved in improvised storylines.[5] Hermits also often build minigames on the server to play with each other.[3] Hermitcraft is known for its family-friendly content.[2][6]

Originally starting in April 2012, Hermitcraft has had 11 vanilla seasons as of late 2026, and it currently has 25 active members. Each of the Hermits of the server creates content chronicling their in-game building and antics, which they post to YouTube in an episodic format or live-stream on Twitch.[7][8]

History

Inspired by the Mindcrack server created by Guude, YouTuber Generikb decided to create his own similar multiplayer server called Hermitcraft, and invited some of his friends to play along.[9][10] Season 1, thus began on 13 April 2012.[1] Generikb left the group after about a year[9] when he was invited to Mindcrack, and Xisumavoid took over administrative server duties.[11]

Over time, Hermitcraft became known for the large-scale builds and redstone projects that it's members created.[2][3] Hermits also often build minigames on the server to play with each other.[3] Some Hermits also get involved in various improvised storylines, which grew in scale over time.[5]

Season 7 included a re-creation of the video game Among Us and a deck-building game called Decked Out, both created by hermit TangoTek.[3]

Hermitcraft saw increased viewership during the COVID-19 pandemic.[11]

In Season 9, VintageBeef created a fully-playable trading card game on the server.[12] A physical edition of the trading card game was later made in response to many fan requests.[2] That same season, Joe Hills created a pinball table inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope.[13] During Season 9, Hermit TinfoilChef passed away in August of 2022.[14] In October 2022, there was a crossover event with Empires SMP.[15]

In February of 2024, Season 10 began with 27 hermits[1] with a new shop permit system[16] and a new event in the beginning of the season, where anyone who died hunts someone who hasn't died yet.[17] They brought in two new YouTubers; Smallishbeans and Skizzleman.[18] In November 2024, the hermits announced via Twitter that Iskall85 and Stressmonster101 had resigned from Hermitcraft.[19] It came out later that Iskall85 had left following a series of sexual harassment allegations from fans and staff.[20]

From 2024, the Minecraft server map from season 9 have been made available for free on the official Minecraft: Bedrock Edition marketplace in collaboration with Mojang.[10][21] Since 2025, the Season 8 map was also freely available on the same marketplace.[22] A copy of the Season 10 world was also released in December 2025.

Season 11 started in November 2025; Welsknight built a Japanese castle, while iJevin built a pirate-themed base. Separately, TangoTek is building a minigame called Decked Out 3.[23]

Seasons

Hermitcraft is divided into seasons based around the in-game world. At the beginning of each season, the Minecraft server is reset, and a new Minecraft world is created from a new world seed.[5] At the end of each season, the game worlds are made available for download on the official Hermitcraft website.[24]

Cultural impact

Hermitcraft creators often appear at official Minecraft events,[5][25] and one creator, MumboJumbo, made a cameo appearance in A Minecraft Movie.[26][27][28]

Charitable efforts

On 23 October 2022, members of the Hermitcraft server hosted a live stream event, which was streamed on GoodTimesWithScar's Twitch channel, to raise money for the Gamers Outreach Foundation. The event raised more than its goal of $25,000 before the stream even officially began, and raised over $400,000 in total.[29][30] The money that the Hermits raised was used to fund the creation of over 100 portable game kiosks called "GO Karts" for hospitalized children. The kiosks were delivered to 25 different hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Australia.[31] Also in 2023, Hermitcraft raised over ₤100,000 towards the construction of a children's education center in Cape Town, South Africa.[32]

In April 2024, Hermitcraft held a second live stream event to raise money for the Gamers Outreach Foundation at their Gamers for Giving LAN party. This time, they raised over $840,000.[33][34]

In April 2025, Hermitcraft held a third live stream event for the Gamers Outreach Foundation at the Mojang Studios offices at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington.[35] During the event, the Hermits raised over $820,000, including over $100,000 from an auction of Hermitcraft memorabilia.[36] On the second day of the event, it was announced that Hermitcraft member GoodTimesWithScar would join the Gamers Outreach Foundation's board of directors.[37]

In April 2026, Hermitcraft held a fourth live stream event of the Gamers Outreach Foundation, once again at the Mojang Studios offices at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington. The stream raised over $1,000,000.[38] In August 2026, the first GO Kart donated to a hospital in Thailand was donated to the Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok.[39]

Members of the Hermitcraft server are known as "Hermits".[40][7][8] The Hermits get resources from each other by building shops and trading diamonds.[41]

Outside the server

Members of the Hermitcraft server occasionally collaborate with members of other servers, such as Empires SMP.[15] Many of the Hermits also participate in the Life Series, a collaborative Minecraft YouTube series run by YouTuber and Hermit Grian,[48] and MC Championship, a Minecraft YouTuber tournament organized by Smajor1995.[1][33]
