Harold Emerson Watson was an American professional football end who played for Minnesota teams during the 1920s. Contemporary newspaper coverage places Watson with the Minneapolis Marines in 1920, the Minneapolis Liberties and Snyder teams in the early 1920s, and the Rochester Aces in 1926. He was named in the Marines’ announced squad for a game against the Green Bay Packers in 1928.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Early life
[edit]Watson was born in Minneapolis on September 30, 1899.[7]
Professional football career
[edit]Minneapolis Marines
[edit]In October 1920, the Duluth Herald listed Watson and Christenson at end for the Minneapolis Marines. The newspaper described the Marines as the state professional football champions and included Watson among the team’s established players.[1] .[8]
Minneapolis Liberties and Snyder teams
[edit]In November 1922, the Minneapolis Morning Tribune listed Watson and Hanson at end in the Minneapolis Liberties’ planned lineup against an all-star team. It described the Liberties as champions of the local professional circuit.[2] A November 1923 lineup in the Redwood Gazette listed Watson at right end for the Liberty-Snyders against Redwood Falls.[3] In October 1924, the St. Cloud Daily Times listed Watson as an end on the Minneapolis Snyder All-Stars roster, with a weight of 175 pounds.[4]
Rochester Aces
[edit]In August 1926, the Rochester Post-Bulletin named Harold Watson among four former Minneapolis Marines recruited for Rochester’s new professional football team.[5] The Minneapolis Star subsequently listed him among the players signed by the Rochester Aces, which it identified with the former Minneapolis Liberty team.[9] A September 3 report in the Post-Bulletin also named him among the former Liberties reporting for practice.[10] The team also played under the name Minnesota All-Stars. On October 8, the Duluth Herald reported that it would adopt the Rochester Aces name after its forthcoming game against Kelley-Duluth.[11] The newspaper’s report of that game, a 7–0 defeat, listed Watson at right end for the All-Stars.[12] An October 13 Post-Bulletin preview listed him at right end in Rochester’s probable lineup against Winona.[13]
Return to the Marines
[edit]In September 1928, the Green Bay Press-Gazette described Watson as a veteran of the Minneapolis Marines and gave his weight as approximately 185 pounds. He was listed as an end in the announced squad for the Marines’ game against the Green Bay Packers.[6]
