Early life and education

[edit]

Marie was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She initially studied pop keyboard before switching to flute and classical piano.

In 2002, she won the Lieutenant Governor's Trophy at the Winnipeg Music Festival, awarded annually for the most outstanding solo or group performance of the festival.[1] She has also received the Gold Medal in flute performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music.[2]

Marie went on to study flute performance at the McGill University Schulich School of Music under Timothy Hutchins, earning a Bachelor of Music.[3] She subsequently earned a Master of Music in flute performance at the Yale School of Music, studying under Ransom Wilson.[4]

While at Yale, she performed with the Yale Philharmonia in a concert at Carnegie Hall. In 2014, she returned to Carnegie Hall to perform at Weill Recital Hall.[5]

Career

Aurelia Productions

While a student at Yale, Marie developed an interest in the presentation of classical music to audiences, contrasting the concert conventions of earlier centuries with contemporary practice. She began incorporating biographical and historical context about composers into her performances. She founded Aurelia Productions in 2010, and the company's first show premiered the following year.

Aurelia Productions' shows combine live musical performance with historical narration, with each production organized around a central theme. Rather than presenting a collection of unrelated works, as is often the case with a conventional recital, the performances use narration and visual material to place the music within a broader historical and biographical context. The shows also make extensive use of projected visuals, with one venue program describing more than 300 projections in a single performance.[6]

Aurelia Productions' first show, The Men Behind the Music: Bach, Handel & Mozart, premiered in Winnipeg in June 2011.[7] It was followed by The Men Behind the Music: An Evening in Paris, first performed in Toronto on May 15, 2016,[8] O Holy Night: Five Centuries of Christmas Music, and The Enchanted Flute. The Enchanted Flute had a performance at the St. Norbert Arts Centre in December 2014, featuring guest performers Xiao Nan Wang and Scott Senior.[9]

Becoming the Beatles

[edit]

After relocating to Oakville, Ontario, in 2017, Marie was commissioned by Don Pangman, founder of ArtHouse Halton, to create a show about the Beatles in the same format as her earlier productions. Becoming the Beatles (originally titled The Men Behind the Music: Beatles Edition) premiered at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts in May 2018, where it sold out two performances, with at least one subsequent livestreamed performance during the COVID-19 pandemic.[10]

Following the premiere, Marie collaborated with Mary Lu Zahalan, the first graduate of a Beatles-focused master's degree program at Liverpool Hope University, who subsequently became the show's stage director.[11]

Recent activity

[edit]

Becoming the Beatles has continued to be performed since its premiere, including at the Orillia Opera House in 2023.[12]

Marie's shows are represented by DeMerchant Artists Agency in Canada and the United States.[13]

Philanthropy

[edit]

On September 24, 2011, Marie held a fundraising concert, Music for Mom, at St. John's Cathedral in Winnipeg, honouring the memory of her mother, who had died of cancer nine years earlier. The concert featured piano, cello, and flute music alongside spoken-word performances and raised close to $5,000 for CancerCare Manitoba.
