HSS DIY
[edit]HSS DIY is a leading UK multi-channel retailer that specializes in tool hire and material selling for DIYers and traders. HSS been a trusted name in the industry for over 50 years [1]and now, it has transformed and rebranded into HSS ProService Marketplace.[2]
History
[edit]Founded in 1957 by Bert Taylor[3], HSS DIY was initially known as The Hire Services Company and it solely focused on tool and equipment hire.
Bert Taylor opened more shops across the area of West Central London, and towards the end of the 1960s, The Hire Service Company was later acquired by scaffolding conglomerate SGB. SGB owned eight tool rental shops under the name Hire Shops Limited. These company names were later merged to create Hire Service Shops Limited or HSS Hire for short.[4]
In October 2025, HSS sold its physical hire division to Endless for £1 to focus on HSS ProService Marketplace, Europe's largest building services digital marketplace.[5] The website is unique and different from any competitor in the industry.[6] Built by ecommerce experts and leading developers. ProService is reshaping the way businesses buy and hire equipment, building materials, fuel and more.[7]
HSS ProService is split into 3 brands: HSS ProService Marketplace, HSS DIY & HSS Training.[8]
Tom Shorten, HSS ProService CEO, spoke about the new marketplace stating “We’re way more than just hire these days. What we’re aiming to do is offer the sort of service that people are now used to getting from the likes of Amazon.”[9]
Customers
[edit]HSS DIY’s core customers are homeowners who want to tackle their own home & garden renovations, and those who work in the trade.
Customers have access 20,000 tools & building materials from a number of well-known brands, all in one place, with the click of a button.[10]
Refinancing
[edit]HSS DIY have completed the refinancing of their debt.[11]
At inception, about £19 million of the ABL facility and the full £25 million in convertible notes were drawn, giving ProService additional liquidity to support working capital and its growth strategy.[12]
The refinancing has helped to gain greater flexibility and is seeing stronger trading in FY27, with revenue and gross profit up 20% year-on-year in the first four months and underlying EBITDA turning profitable from May 2026. [13]
Tom Shorten addressed the Full Year financial results by noting "Following the year-end, the group completed a refinancing exercise which provides the group greater financial flexibility to execute its strategy, as the previous facilities were due to be repaid in September". We returned to growth in the final quarter and have grown more strongly still in the first few months of this new financial year.”[14]
Partnerships
[edit]In October 2025, HSS ProService sold just under 10% stake to Speedy Hire, who are currently their main tool & equipment supplier.[15]
