Gynvael Coldwind (real name Michał Składnikiewicz[1]) is a Polish programmer and white hat hacker specialising in computer security.[2] In 2013 he co-founded the capture the flag team Dragon Sector,[2] and the same year he and Mateusz Jurczyk received a Pwnie Award for research on race conditions in the Windows kernel.[3] He created the free technical magazine Paged Out![4] and wrote the book Zrozumieć programowanie (To Understand Programming).[5] From 2010 to 2023 he worked for Google in Zurich.[6][7]

Career

[edit]

From 2010 he worked for Google in Zurich, among other roles as an information security engineer.[7] He announced his departure from Google in May 2023.[6]

In February 2013, together with Mateusz Jurczyk ("j00ru") and Adam Iwaniuk, he founded Dragon Sector, a team competing in capture the flag (CTF) competitions.[2] He was the team's captain[7] and remains a member.[8] Dragon Sector ranked first in the annual CTFtime ranking in 2014, 2018 and 2019.[9][8]

He chaired the programme committee of the Security PWNing Conference, organised by Instytut PWN, for its first four editions, until 2019.[10][11] He also serves on the programme committee of the CONFidence conference.[12][13]

Research

[edit]

In 2013, together with Mateusz Jurczyk, he received a Pwnie Award in Las Vegas in the "Most Innovative Research" category[14][5][3] for the paper Identifying and Exploiting Windows Kernel Race Conditions via Memory Access Patterns. The paper described a method of detecting double fetch bugs (a type of race condition) in operating system kernels using CPU-level instrumentation.[15] Their tool, Bochspwn, found at least 37 vulnerabilities in the kernel and drivers of Microsoft Windows,[15] and they presented the results at Black Hat USA 2013.[16]

Paged Out!

[edit]

In 2019 he launched Paged Out!, a free, experimental technical magazine covering programming, hacking, computer security and retro computing, in which each article fits on a single page. Its models included the magazines from which he had learned programming, such as Bajtek.[4] He leads the project.[17]

Writing

[edit]

He has published articles in industry magazines, including Hakin9, under his real name,[1] and Programista, where he wrote the series "Diabeł tkwi w szczegółach" ("The devil is in the details") on topics at the intersection of programming and security.[18]
