Graphite Ventures is a Canadian venture capital firm based in Toronto that backs seed-stage business-to-business (B2B) technology companies across Canada.[2][3] Its investments span B2B software and capital-efficient hardware in financial, industrial, property, business operations, health and cybersecurity verticals, and the firm states its investment strategy focuses on early-stage scaling.[3]

The firm grew out of the Investment Accelerator Fund (IAF), a seed-stage fund the Government of Ontario set up in 2008 to support early-stage technology companies that struggled to raise private capital.[4] The IAF team spun out the operation as a private fund in late 2021 and launched it publicly in January 2022.[5][6] With CAD$500 million in assets under management,[1] the firm has recorded 46 exits as of January 2026,[1] and the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (CVCA) has ranked it among Canada's most active seed-stage and private-independent investors.[1][7]

Investment Accelerator Fund (2008–2021)

Graphite traces its origins to the MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, which the Government of Ontario established and funded in 2008 to close a gap in seed financing for the province's technology sector.[4] Barry Gekiere ran the fund as managing director from 2010 until his death in October 2020.[8] Lance Laking later served as the fund's managing director.[6][5] By the time Graphite launched in 2022, the IAF had made more than 175 investments over fourteen years.[5] The IAF continued to operate as a separate fund after the spinout.[4]

Spinout and launch (2021–2022)

The spinout was announced on 26 January 2022. The new vehicle, Graphite Investment Accelerator Fund IV, launched with a CA$100 million target.[5][6] Anchor capital came from the OMERS pension fund, which committed CA$25 million, and the Government of Ontario matched that amount from returns on earlier IAF investments; private institutional and entrepreneurial investors supplied the rest.[5] The fund exceeded the initial target with a final close of $120M.[1] Craig Leonard and Aaron Bast, senior investment directors at the IAF, became general partners of the new firm, and Kevin Madill later joined as a general partner.[5][6][3]

Fund IV

Graphite widened its reach beyond Ontario after the launch, building a presence in Alberta, Western Canada, and Quebec.[9] A CAD$10 million commitment from the Alberta Enterprise Corporation in mid-2023 helped the fund exceed the initial target.[9][10][2] Other backers of Fund IV include the pension fund OMERS, CIBC Innovation Banking, and MaRS supported by the Province of Ontario.[5][9][2] CVCA's The 50 lists the fund at CAD$120 million in its 2026 edition, by which point Graphite had made 51 investments from it and deployed more than CAD$49 million.[1]

Investment focus

Graphite concentrates on seed-stage B2B technology companies in Canada, typically writing initial cheques of between CAD$500,000 and CAD$1.5 million and following on in later rounds.[3] Its stated areas of interest include B2B software and capital-efficient hardware in financial, industrial, property, business operations, health and cybersecurity verticals.[3][2]

Notable investments and exits

Several companies in Graphite's portfolio have been acquired. ProNavigator, an insurance-technology firm whose 2022 financing round Graphite co-led, was acquired by Guidewire in October 2025.[11][12] Ontopical, a government-procurement intelligence company whose 2023 seed extension Graphite co-led, was acquired by SOVRA in August 2025.[13][14] Fluence Technologies, a financial-consolidation software maker the firm had backed, was acquired by Anaplan in 2024.[15][16]

The firm's other holdings include the energy-storage developer e-Zinc,[17] the pharmacy-software company MedMe Health,[18] the cross-border business-banking provider Loop Financial,[19] the life-sciences software firm ACTO,[6] the construction-technology company Brickeye,[20] the cybersecurity firm Cavelo,[21] the construction-workforce platform Bridgit,[2] the Montréal-based enterprise data and ERP analytics company Maxa,[22][9] and the queue-management software company WaitWell.[9] In 2026, Graphite led the pre-seed round of Kaster Technologies, a Polytechnique Montréal spin-off whose software optimises pharmaceutical manufacturing.[23] Another portfolio company, the biosensor manufacturer Nicoya, acquired the British firm Applied Photophysics in 2025 in a deal led by Graphite.[24]

Leadership

Graphite's general partners are Aaron Bast, Craig Leonard and Kevin Madill.[3] Bast and Leonard were senior investment directors at the MaRS IAF before the spinout.[6] Madill, who is based in Ottawa,[25] co-founded the traffic-technology company Miovision before moving into venture capital.[26][27]
