Goudy Text is a blackletter typeface designed by American type designer Frederic W. Goudy and released in 1928. Goudy based it on an earlier alphabet called Goudy Black, which he had drawn for his 1922 book Elements of Lettering. He designed it in the tradition of the early blackletter used by Johannes Gutenberg, rather than the more decorative styles common in the 19th century. The name “Goudy Text” was suggested by the Lanston Monotype company.[1]
Goudy Text follows the Textura style of blackletter. Type historian Alexander S. Lawson describes it as similar to Textura letters from 15th-century Italy, with some French influence. Goudy also designed Lombardic Capitals as an alternative set of capitals for the typeface.[1]
A digital version of Goudy Text is available from Lanston through Adobe Fonts.[2]
