Gerold Krauel (9 September 1927 – 20 March 2016) was a German stage and film actor, radio drama performer, painter, and graphic artist. He was a long-time ensemble member of the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater.
Life
[edit]Early life and education
[edit]Krauel studied painting from 1943 to 1944 at the Stettin Kunst- und Werkschule under Professors Schlapmann and Otto Lang-Wollin.[1]
After World War II, he lived in Burhave in Lower Saxony as one of the German expellees. In 1946, he moved to Munich, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Josef Schmid-Fichtelberg. He was a co-founder of the group "Junge Künstler der Nachkriegszeit" ("Young Artists of the Post-War Period"), which opposed the artistic ideas promoted during the National Socialist era.
In 1948, he began studying at the Hochschule für darstellende und bildende Kunst in Hanover on a scholarship, which enabled him to combine artistic and dramatic studies.[1]
Radio and theatre career
[edit]During the 1950s, Krauel worked for Radio Bremen as a presenter and radio drama performer. Among other roles, he appeared as the "3. Mann" in the radio play Wendemarke (1952) and in the production Die Untersuchung des Heiligen Antonius (1982).[2]
In 1955, he began his acting career at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. In the following years, he performed at theatres in Pforzheim and Trier. From 1962 to 1964, he was engaged at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater.[3]
He later appeared at the municipal theatres in Heidelberg. In 1977, he returned to Oldenburg, where he worked as a permanent ensemble member until 1990 and continued to appear as a guest actor until 1992.[4]
Journalism and teaching
[edit]Between 1946 and 1972, Krauel worked as an art critic for the newspaper Nordwest-Zeitung (NWZ). He also taught art education in adult education programmes and at schools in Oldenburg and Varel.

Visual arts
[edit]Following the end of his regular acting career, Krauel intensified his work as a painter and graphic artist. His work contains elements of symbolism and expressionism.
Technique and working methods
[edit]Krauel preferred mixed media techniques on paper. His works combined precise line drawings with areas of colour and impasto elements. He frequently used contrasting and dark colour tones as well as deliberately deformed human figures.

[edit]The artist's main interest was the human being and the depiction of human emotions.

- Mask motifs: In several works, Krauel used masks as recurring visual elements.
