Gaurav Burman (born January 16, 1972) is an Indian-origin businessman and investor based in London. He is a fifth-generation member of the Burman family, the founding family of Dabur India Limited, one of India's largest consumer goods companies. He serves as Director of Dabur International and is the founder and Director of Burman Hospitality Private Limited, the exclusive master franchisee of Taco Bell in India. He manages the Burman family's investment programme, which oversees assets of more than US$1 billion.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Burman was born on January 16, 1972. He graduated from Tufts University, Massachusetts, in 1993 with a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and History.[2]
Career

[edit]Burman began his career in the Business Development Group at Dabur India Limited. In 1997, he joined the private equity division of Kleinwort Benson, a global investment bank, before relocating to New York City to work with Dresdner's Global Private Equity Group, where he helped develop new private equity products.[1]
He served as President and Secretary of Atlas Acquisition Corp., a US$200 million special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) listed in the United States.[3]
Taco Bell India
[edit]In 2014, Burman founded Burman Hospitality Private Limited (BHPL). In June 2015, BHPL opened its first Taco Bell outlet in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, becoming the brand's first franchisee in India.[4][5]
In 2019, BHPL was appointed exclusive master franchisee for Taco Bell across all of India. The same year, Yum! Brands, Taco Bell's parent company, took a minority stake in BHPL.[6]
By August 2022, BHPL had opened its 100th Taco Bell restaurant in Gurugram and announced a US$100 million investment plan targeting 600 stores across India, making India one of Taco Bell's largest markets outside the United States.[7]
Investment activities
[edit]The Burman family, under Gaurav's management, has invested over US$500 million across healthcare, financial services, retail, and hospitality, with joint ventures involving global corporations including Aviva, Experian, and Yum! Brands.[8]
In September 2023, Burman acquired a 7.5% stake in Mitsu, a digital health startup offering guided self-therapy programmes for anxiety and depression, and joined its board of directors.[9][10]
Mahadev betting app case
[edit]In November 2023, Mumbai Police named Burman along with 30 others, including his brother Mohit Burman, as accused in a First Information Report (FIR) connected to the Mahadev online betting app case. A spokesperson for the Burman family denied the allegations, stating that neither Mohit nor Gaurav Burman had any knowledge of or contact with the accused individuals named in the FIR.[11][12]

Personal life
[edit]Burman is married to Karima Burman and has two children. He is the younger brother of Mohit Burman, Chairman of Dabur India. He is based in London and pursues motorsports, sailing, tennis, and long-distance running. He serves on the advisory boards of Sesame Street and The Nature Conservancy, and is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO).[1]
