Gage Oxley (born 21 April 1997) is a British film director, screenwriter and producer from Leeds.[1] They founded the Leeds production company Oxygen Films, and many of their films deal with LGBTQ+ subjects.[2] Oxley uses they/he pronouns.[3]
Early life
[edit]Oxley was born in Leeds.[1] At eight they joined the Leeds Young Film Festival as a young consultant, and stayed involved until they were 18. They later worked for the festival, first as an intern and then as its youth engagement coordinator.[2][4] They did not go to university or film school.[2]
Career
[edit]Oxley set up Oxygen Films in Leeds in 2015 with Sian Carry and Eleanor Hodson.[2][5] The company is non-profit and mostly works with people aged 16 to 25.[2] Oxley won a Love Arts Award in 2016, and in 2017 was nominated in the Role Models category of the National Diversity Awards.[2]
Their first films with the company were short films marking 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales. The first, This World We Live In (2017), was made for about £500.[2] It follows a student, played by Jack Parr, who starts using drugs to avoid facing his sexuality. In The Film Magazine, Katie Doyle found the narration unnecessary and parts of the script clichéd, but praised Oxley's direction.[6] The second, Pulse (2017), is a dance film shot in one take with no dialogue.[2] It won a Diamond Award at the British International Amateur Film Festival[7] and a bronze medal at the 2018 UNICA festival in the Czech Republic.[8] In 2018, Pulse screened as part of the Youth Shorts programme at the Vancouver International Film Festival.[9]
Oxley's feature Wretched Things, made up of three stories, was shot in Leeds with a cast and crew aged 16 to 25. It premiered in Leicester Square in January 2019.[10] Rich Cline of Shadows on the Wall gave it four out of five. He thought it looked impressive for a low-budget film and praised the cast and music, though he felt its warnings about the risks the characters take became preachy at times.[11] Oxley was interviewed about their work on BBC Radio Leeds that April,[12] and later travelled to Los Angeles to promote the film.[2]
In 2020 Oxley released A Series of Light, a six-part anthology series, on Amazon Prime Video. Each episode follows a different character. Aaron Haughton of Viddy Well gave it four out of five, finding the first half stronger than the second.[13]
In 2021 Oxley was one of nine people in the first group of the Virgin Money Foundation's Young Change Makers Fellowship, and received a £10,000 grant.[14]
Oxley was a producer on Lonelier Than Love, directed by Em J Gilbertson,[15] which received funding from the BFI NETWORK Short Film Fund in 2024[16] and screened at BFI Flare in 2026.[17]
Oxley wrote and directed Nosebleed (2026), a short thriller about a content moderator, starring Adam Wadsworth and Theo Walker. It was shot in Leeds and co-produced with the York Theatre Company in New York.[5] Attitude, Queerty and Instinct covered the film when its trailer was released in September 2026.[18][19][20]
