Frans Oskar Jousi (16 May 1890, Mäntsälä – 17 November 1931, Tampere) was a Finnish master builder from the who designed several buildings in the 1920s for the Tampere-based cooperative Osuusliike Voima.[1][2][3]

Frans Oskar Jousi was born in Mäntsälä in May 1890 to Rikhard Högrén (b. 17 September 1852 Mäntsälä, d. September 1932 Mäntsälä) a cottager at the Kalsola farm[4] and Maria Johansdouther Högrén (née Tupala) (b. 26 July 1854 as the second son. The family already had a six years old son, Rikhard Jalmari Högrén (b. 14 April 1884 in Mäntsälä, d. 29 June 1951 in Tampere).[5]

Jousi married the nurse Toini Cecilia Siikonen (formerly Jousi, née Polviander) (b. 24 September 1888 in Huittinen, d. 19 August 1969 in Tammela) in Mäntsälä on 22 July 1910.[6] Toini Cecilia’s great-grandfather was a man who had participated in the Finnish War as a standard-bearer for the Pori Regiment Karl Gustaf Polviander, considered the model for the main character in J. L. Runeberg's The Tales of Ensign Stål.[1] On October 31, 1911, they had a son, Tyyko Einari Jousi, who remained the couple's only child. On August 12 and 13, 1911, Frans Jousi competed in the track and field championships held at Sääksjärvi, Mäntsälä, representing the gymnastics and sports club Mäntsälän Veli; he finished second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races.[7]

The family moved to Pirkkala in late 1911, where Toini worked as a nurse. By the time Frans graduated in 1915, the family had moved to Tampere, where they lived until Frans's death. Jousi passed away at his home in Tampere on November 17, 1931, and was buried five days later at Kalevankangas Cemetery.[8]

After Frans's death, the half-share of the Tuomaala farm in Mäntsälä that Tyyko Einari Jousi had inherited was sold to Toini Jousi in 1936 for 6,000 mk[9], and on September 24, 1938, Toini sold the entire farm to E. Salonen for 23,500 mk.[10] Tyyko lived in Tampere for almost his entire life, and in 2002, he was buried at Kalevankangas Cemetery alongside his father, his wife, and his son, who had been struck by a car and killed at the age of five. On June 23, 1939, Toini married Kalle August Siikosen who was born in Kangasala and already had six children. The couple lived in Lunkaa, Tammela, until the end of their lives.

Frans Jousi's great-great-grandson is Vili Antero Jousi, the Left Alliance politician, philosopher and artist from Hervanta.

Career

After graduating from Tampere Industrial School in 1915, Frans Jousi worked as a draftsman for the Uusimaa County Agricultural Society, architect Georg Schreck and master builder Heikki Tiitola. From 1920, Jousi was the director of the construction office of Osuusliike Voima and the property manager of the company.[3][6]

Style

In the 1920s, Jousi designed several buildings for Tampere that represented simplified classicism. The most famous of the buildings designed by Jouse is the four-story residential and commercial building of Tammelan Voima, completed in 1920 on the eastern edge of Tammelantori.[11]
