Frank Binder (born c. 1959)[a] is a Swiss billionaire businessman and entrepreneur.[2][3] An heir to the Merck pharmaceuticals family, representing the Swiss branch of the descendants of founder Heinrich Emanuel Merck,[1][2][4] he is the founder and chairman of Landbell Group, a recycling logistics company, and the founder of Ulyssia, a residential superyacht project announced in 2024.[2][5][6]
Career
[edit]Binder trained as an architect and holds an MBA.[2][5] In 1999 he founded Landbell Group, which became a global company in recycling logistics and a competitor to the former German recycling monopolist Duales System Deutschland; as of 2013 he serves as its chairman.[2][1] In 2008 he joined the supervisory board of Merck KGaA, the Darmstadt-based pharmaceutical and chemical company controlled by his family; the company's 2009 debt issuance prospectus lists him as an entrepreneur and as chairman of Landbell AG für Rückholsysteme in Mainz.[7]
In 2013 the Swiss business magazine Bilanz included Binder in its list of the 300 richest Swiss residents, estimating his fortune at 1–1.5 billion Swiss francs.[1]
Binder previously operated a yacht dealership in Switzerland for the Ferretti Group and owns a naval engineering and design firm in Monaco.[2] As of 2009 he was also chairman of BMR-Yachting AG in Zurich.[7] Around 2012 he became involved with the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven and served as president of Lloyd Yachts SAM, a company registered in Monaco.[1]
Ulyssia
[edit]Around 2002, Binder considered purchasing a residence aboard The World, a residential ship that continuously circumnavigates the globe, but decided against it.[2] Two decades later, after an opportunity arose to work with members of The World's former management team, he founded Ulyssia, a planned 320-metre, 15-deck residential superyacht with 133 private residences, which he is funding himself.[2][5][3][6] Forbes described Binder as the project's chief executive in September 2024;[5] by January 2025, Condé Nast Traveller reported Alain J. Gruber as Ulyssia's CEO, with Binder as founder.[6]
The vessel was designed by Espen Øino and is to be built by the German shipyard Meyer Werft, with delivery expected by the end of the decade.[2][5] Residences are priced from approximately €10 million, with penthouses exceeding €57 million.[5][2]
Personal life
[edit]As of 2013, Binder lived in Zurich, where his plan to replace the Villa Winkelwiese in the city's old town with a new six-storey residence was the subject of legal challenges from neighbors.[1] By 2024 he was living in Monaco, and he also owns property in Los Angeles.[2] In 2018 he purchased a mansion in the Hollywood Hills known as Stanley 1, with interiors designed by Lenny Kravitz, for US$33 million in cash.[4]
He has a son.[2] He has described himself as a lifelong yachtsman.[5]
