Feral Five are a British electronic pop duo based in London, consisting of Kat Five (Katharina Tyldesley) and Drew Five (Andy Smith).[1] Their work combines electronic music with digital and audiovisual practices, including the use of artificial intelligence and algorithmic systems.[2]
Career
[edit]Feral Five are a London-based act whose music has received airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music and Radio X.[3][1]
They released their debut studio album, Truth Is The New Gold, in 2023 on the independent label Reckless Yes.[2] The album has been discussed in independent music publications, which note its thematic focus on digital culture, environmental issues and contemporary media.[2]
Art and design
[edit]The visual identity of Truth Is The New Gold was developed in collaboration with graphic designer Malcolm Garrett. Materials associated with the album have been archived in the Special Collections at Manchester Metropolitan University.[4]
Feral Five have also developed audiovisual work combining music with algorithmic visuals and digital media.[4]
Performances
[edit]Feral Five have performed in multidisciplinary contexts combining music, art and technology. They appeared in an event curated by Martyn Ware at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in conjunction with the Picasso Portraits exhibition.[2][1]
They have also participated in events such as Music Tech Fest, incorporating experimental digital instruments into their performances.[1]
Technology and practice
[edit]The duo’s work incorporates emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, live coding and 3D processes.[2]
Their practice has been described as operating across sound, visual media and digital design.[4]
