Federico Cabitza is an Italian computer scientist and associate professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Milan, Italy).[1] Since 2026, he has served as Director of the Digital Health & Wellbeing Center at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) in Trento.[2] His work focuses on artificial intelligence, medical informatics, decision support systems, human–AI collaboration, automation bias, and the societal and organizational implications of AI technologies.

Education and academic career

Cabitza earned a degree in Computer Science Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 2001 and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca in 2007.[3] He is Associate Professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca, where he teaches courses in human–computer interaction, human–AI interaction, information systems, and decision support systems. He is also affiliated with the doctoral programme in Computer Science.[4] Since 2021, he has directed the local node of the CINI National Laboratory on "Computer Science and Society". Since 2019, he has coordinated the Laboratory of Models for Uncertainty, Decisions, and Interactions (MUDI), a research group focusing on uncertainty modelling, decision support, and human–AI interaction.[5]

Research

Cabitza's research investigates the impact of artificial intelligence in organizational and professional settings, with particular attention to decision support systems based on machine learning. His work has addressed topics including automation bias, overreliance on AI-supported decisions, deskilling, human–AI collaboration, trustworthy AI, uncertainty management, and the evaluation of AI systems in healthcare and other domains.[6] He has collaborated with hospitals and healthcare institutions on projects involving clinical decision support, medical informatics, and the assessment of AI technologies in medical practice. Collaborating institutions have included Istituto Ortopedico IRCCS Galeazzi, IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, Buzzi Hospital, and Gaetano Pini Hospital in Milan.[7] He has authored more than 300 research publications in international conference proceedings, books, and scientific journals.[8] Since 2020, he has been included in the Stanford/Elsevier ranking of the top 2% of researchers worldwide by citation impact.[9] He co-authored, with Luciano Floridi, the book Artificial Intelligence: The Use of New Machines, published by Bompiani in 2021.[10]

Professional activities

Beyond academia, Cabitza has been involved in technology-transfer and consulting initiatives concerning artificial intelligence, digital innovation, and decision support. He is a partner in the university spin-off RedOpen, whose activities include cybersecurity, data protection, and AI impact assessment in organizational settings.[11] He has also collaborated with public and private organizations on projects related to medical informatics and AI-supported decision making, including initiatives involving Deloitte Italia Healthcare and Siemens Healthineers Italia.[12]

Standardization activities

From 2021 to 2023, Cabitza served as the CEI representative in international standardization activities concerning the evaluation of medical device software. Since 2023, he has been involved in the activities of the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 committee on artificial intelligence standardization.[13]

Editorial and scientific service

Cabitza has served as program chair of international conferences including ITAIS 2017, HEALTHINF 2020, and HEALTHINF 2023. He has also co-chaired workshops and scientific sessions on topics related to healthcare informatics, data visualization, socio-technical systems, and information technologies.[14] Since 2020, he has served as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Medical Informatics.[15] He has also contributed to editorial activities in journals including Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction, Journal of Medical Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Cross-disciplinary Research in Computational Law, and Mondo Digitale.[16]

Public engagement

Cabitza has participated in public events, outreach initiatives, and professional seminars concerning artificial intelligence, healthcare innovation, usability, and digital transformation. These activities have involved cultural organizations, scientific festivals, educational initiatives, and collaborations with public and private-sector organizations.[17]
