Draft:Federated Data Platform

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Federated Data Platform (FDP) is a NHS England programme that uses Palantir Technologies' Foundry software to connect and analyse patient data across NHS trusts and integrated care boards (ICBs).[1][2] The contract, awarded in December 2023 to a Palantir-led consortium, is valued at up to £330 million over seven years and includes partners such as Accenture and PwC.[1][3] The FDP is intended to help hospitals manage waiting lists, schedule operations, plan discharges, coordinate supplies, and support population-health planning, without replacing existing local IT systems.[1][2] Each trust and ICB runs its own FDP instance, with NHS organisations acting as data controllers and Palantir acting as a data processor under their instructions.[2][4][5] NHS England and Palantir have claimed the FDP contributed to 110,000 additional operations and a 15% reduction in patient discharge delays.[3][6][7] However, NHS England later acknowledged these figures weren't supported by evidence. Other variables were not controlled for, and the published methodology did not support cause-and-effect conclusions.[6] Reports and internal briefings indicated some Palantir staff had "unlimited access" to identifiable patient data, prompting concerns from the government's independent adviser on health data.[6] The contract includes a break clause in February 2027, and several select committees, MPs, trade unions, and campaign groups have called for it to be terminated over privacy, transparency, and ethical concerns.[3][8]
