Draft:Fatima bint Aqil

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fatimah bint Aqil ibn Abi Talib (Arabic: فاطمة بنت عقيل بن أبي طالب) She was a daughter of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, the elder brother of Ali ibn Abi Talib, making her his niece.[1] According to Musʿab al-Zubayri’s Nasab Quraysh, she was one of Aqil’s daughters, whose mothers were different ummhat awlad (enslaved women). Her sisters included Umm Hani (Ramlah), Zaynab, Zaynab al-Sughra, and Umm Luqman.[2] She later married Ali ibn Yazid ibn Rukānah of Banu Abd al-Muttalib,[3] and they had children.

Elegies

[edit]

Ibn Abd Rabbih's al-ʿIqd al-Farīd attributes an elegy to an unnamed daughter of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, mourning Husayn ibn Ali and those killed with him.[4] A later report in al-Qunduzī's Yanabi' al-Mawadda identifies the daughter of Aqil who composed the elegy as Fatimah bint Aqil.[5]

The elegy begins:

“O my eyes, shed tears and lament,
and mourn for the family of the Messenger.
Six of them, all descended from Ali,
were struck down,
and five from the family of Aqil”.[6]
