Emmanuel Amoako-Jansen, also known professionally as Pennedhaus, is a German-Ghanaian film director, screenwriter, cinematographer, music producer and songwriter based in Berlin.[1] His work combines film, music and visual storytelling and frequently focuses on Black perspectives, cultural identity and emotional vulnerability.[2]
He is the founder of the Berlin-based film production platform ATR.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Amoako-Jansen is from Haan in North Rhine-Westphalia, where he grew up in a Ghanaian household. He has described this background as shaping his role as a bridge between different cultural perspectives.[4] He studied music management in Cologne.[5]
In September 2013, he relocated to Munich to work in music consulting and licensing at the music centre of the German television network ProSieben.[5] He later relocated to Berlin, where he is based.[1][6]
Career
[edit]Commercial and film work
[edit]Amoako-Jansen initially worked across music and commercial visual production. He founded the creative studio iemagination, through which he developed film, sound, art direction and visual storytelling projects for commercial and cultural clients.[7][8] The studio's portfolio includes work connected to brands and platforms such as Puma, Snipes and Boiler Room.[8]
He later founded ATR, a production platform focused on film, serial formats and original narrative work.[3] His feature-film debut Stilllieben was produced under the ATR banner.[3]
In 2020, Amoako-Jansen directed the short film Danke, based on a story by Ella Essien. The film focuses on the representation and experiences of Black women and challenges stereotypical portrayals in German media.[1][4] The film was also discussed in connection with the release of his single "Azonto".[6]
Amoako-Jansen later completed his feature-film debut, Stilllieben. The episodic film follows Black men in Berlin and explores masculinity, intimacy, vulnerability and emotional communication.[2] Sleek Magazine described the film as an intimate exploration of masculinity and vulnerability that presents the emotional inner lives of Black men beyond stereotypical images.[2] Ahead of its planned public release, Stilllieben was presented through a series of curated preview screenings in 2026.[9] Its public release is planned for 2027.[9]
The relationship between film and music in Stilllieben also formed the basis of the 2026 Pop-Kultur Festival discussion Beyond the Screen, featuring Amoako-Jansen alongside musicians ANNY and Mulay. The discussion examined music as a narrative element in cinematography, writing and editing.[3]
Alongside his directing work, Amoako-Jansen worked as a director of photography on Sam - Ein Sachse: Die Doku, a documentary connected to the Disney+ series Sam - A Saxon.[10]
He also worked as a cinematographer on the ARTE documentary series Reminded.[11][12]
In 2023, Amoako-Jansen participated in the panel discussion Visual Storytelling in BIPOC Communities, hosted by DADDY Magazine with support from the Lovie Awards. The discussion addressed the experiences of Black filmmakers, representation in the German film industry and the influence of multicultural backgrounds on visual storytelling.[7][13]
Music
[edit]As a songwriter, Amoako-Jansen contributed to music by German R&B singer Ado Kojo. He is credited as a writer of "Venus" and "Wer ist dieser Junge", the latter featuring rapper Eko Fresh.[14][15]
In 2017, performing as Pennedhaus, he collaborated with rapper Ebow on "Paradise", released on her album Komplexität. He appeared as a featured artist and received a songwriting credit.[16][17]
Amoako-Jansen also worked as tour manager for Hamburg rapper Eunique.[18]
As a solo artist, Amoako-Jansen releases music under the name Pennedhaus. His German-language solo debut "Azonto" was released in 2020 and combined Afrobeats, pop and soul influences. The song refers to the Ghanaian dance style of the same name and its significance as a shared cultural expression within the African diaspora.[6][1]
Later in 2020, the German music publication Diffus selected his self-produced track "So wie Diddy" as its recommendation of the day. The publication described the track as addressing entrepreneurship, motivation and creative ambition.[18]
Music journalism
[edit]In addition to his filmmaking and music work, Amoako-Jansen has conducted interviews relating to contemporary music and African popular culture. In 2019, he and journalist Malcolm Ohanwe interviewed Nigerian musician Rema for the Bayerischer Rundfunk youth platform PULS. The interview addressed Rema's career, the international development of Afrobeats and the influence of musicians with West African backgrounds in Germany.[19]
