Edgard El Chaar is a periodontist, educator, and dental practice founder. He is a clinical professor of periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and previously directed the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics at New York University College of Dentistry. [1]

Early life and education

[edit]

El Chaar was born in Beirut, Lebanon. He earned a dental degree at Saint Joseph University in 1993. He moved to New York for postgraduate training in periodontics and dental implants at NYU, where he later earned a DDS and a master’s degree in oral biology. [2]

Career and practices

[edit]

El Chaar spent more than two decades teaching at NYU College of Dentistry. He served as a clinical associate professor in its Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry and directed its Advanced Education Program in Periodontics from 2013 to 2021.[3] He also founded and directed a postgraduate periodontics program at Lutheran Medical Center in 2012. [4]Earlier in his career, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve Dental Corps, retiring as a major. [5]

Alongside his teaching, El Chaar opened Edgard El Chaar DDS PC, a New York City practice focused on periodontics and implant dentistry. [6] He also founded NYC Dental Smiles, which provides general, prosthodontics, and cosmetic dental care across Manhattan.[7] He established the EEC Institute in 2008 as a continuing education and research organization for dental professionals. [8]

Research and writing

[edit]

El Chaar’s research includes implant treatment, bone and tissue regeneration, and planning care after tooth extraction.[9] He authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and among them an extraction-site classification discussed in a later systematic review and is named as an inventor on a U.S. patent for a dental implant surgery method.[10]

He edited the 2023 textbook Practical Techniques in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry[11] and wrote Reclaiming Dentistry: A Blueprint for Practitioner Empowerment in the Corporate Age.[12]
