The Eddystone Trust is an independent British charity providing HIV and sexual health services across South West England. It was founded in Plymouth in 1987 by a group of volunteers responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic,[1] and is now a registered charity and company limited by guarantee with its registered office in Totnes, Devon.[2]

History

[edit]

The organisation began in Plymouth in 1987 as a volunteer-led response to the AIDS epidemic, and has since extended its work across the wider South West.[1] It was incorporated as a company on 28 October 1999 under the name Plymouth Eddystone Trust,[3] and entered the register of charities on 18 November 1999.[4] An earlier name, Plymouth Eddystone Group, is also recorded by the Charity Commission for England and Wales.[4] The company adopted its current name on 12 August 2003.[3]

In January 2021 the Charity Commission recorded a transfer of funds to the trust from The Worcester Foundation (charity no. 1049504).[4] The trust has also taken over coordination of the C-Card condom distribution scheme in Gloucestershire.[5]

Services

[edit]

The trust's work covers HIV prevention, testing and support for people living with HIV. Its services include:[1][6]

  • Rapid HIV testing, with results in around 20 minutes, available in person and online, alongside rapid in-person syphilis testing and support to complete a full sexual health screen.[7]
  • Emotional and practical support for people living with or affected by HIV, including peer support groups, advocacy, help with housing and money issues, and support to access specialist HIV clinics.[6][7]
  • Prevention work, including free condoms and lubricant by post, outreach in community venues, and support to access pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).[7][8]
  • Brief interventions and longer-term behaviour change work, including around chemsex.[7]
  • A support community for people new to the UK who are living with or affected by HIV.[8]
  • Training on HIV, blood-borne viruses and sexual health for health and social care professionals.[6][8]

Areas served

[edit]

The trust reports working across Cornwall, Plymouth, Torbay, Devon, Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.[1]

Funding and governance

[edit]

Much of the trust's work is commissioned by local authorities and public health bodies.[9] In the financial year ending 31 March 2024 it reported total income of £730,503, of which £553,389 came from nine government contracts, and total expenditure of £724,589. It employed 16 staff.[10] The trustees also serve as the company's directors.[11]
