Christopher W. Shade, PhD, is an American environmental chemist, researcher, and founder known for his work in mercury speciation, detoxification science, and nutrient delivery systems. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Quicksilver Scientific, a Colorado-based health sciences company that develops liposomal and nanoemulsion formulations. Shade is associated with the development of detoxification protocols and supplement delivery technologies used in integrative and functional medicine. He is a frequent presenter at medical and scientific conferences, including events organized by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the American College for the Advancement in Medicine.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Shade was born in Pennsylvania and grew up near the New Jersey border. He received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Environmental Science from Lehigh University, focusing on aquatic chemistry and environmental monitoring. He later completed a PhD in Environmental Science at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, where his doctoral research addressed mercury speciation and analytical methods for distinguishing organic and inorganic forms of mercury.[1]

Career and Research

[edit]

Mercury Speciation

[edit]

Shade developed a patented method for mercury speciation analysis (U.S. Patent No. 7,285,419[2]) that separates and quantifies organic and inorganic mercury in biological and environmental samples.[3] The technique integrates chromatography with cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (CVAFS), enabling sensitive detection of different mercury species. The method has been applied in environmental monitoring, fisheries testing, and biomonitoring studies.[4]

Quicksilver Scientific

[edit]

In 2006, Shade founded Quicksilver Scientific in Lafayette, Colorado, originally offering mercury testing services based on his patent. The company later expanded into the manufacture of liposomal supplements, botanical extracts, and multi-phase detoxification protocols.[5]

Focus Areas

[edit]

Shade's research and product development have centered on:

  • Environmental toxicology: quantifying methylmercury, inorganic mercury, and ethylmercury and their differing toxicokinetics.[6]
  • Detoxification systems: multi-phase approaches, including the "Push–Catch" protocol, which combines mobilization of toxins with gastrointestinal binding agents.[7]
  • Glutathione delivery: development of liposomal glutathione formulations to improve absorption and support oxidative stress pathways.[8]
  • Liposomal and nanoemulsion systems: adaptation of drug-delivery technologies for nutraceutical applications, including compounds such as R-lipoic acid and curcumin. Additional patented work includes delivery system innovations such as U.S. Patent No. 10,722,465,[9] U.S. Patent No. 11,291,702,[10] U.S. Patent No. 11,304,900,[11] U.S. Patent No. 11,344,497,[12] U.S. Patent 12,121,558,[13] U.S. Patent 12,121,558,[14] and U.S. Patent 12,311,052

Speaking Engagements and Education

[edit]

Shade has presented at professional conferences in integrative medicine, nutrition, and environmental health, including the American College for the Advancement in Medicine and the International College of Integrative Medicine.[1] He has also provided continuing education programs, webinars, and practitioner training on mercury testing, detoxification protocols, and nutrient delivery methods. His work has appeared in practitioner-oriented publications such as Townsend Letter.

Philosophy

[edit]

In interviews and public talks, Shade has linked his research in detoxification science with broader themes of ecological stewardship and personal development, describing detoxification as both a medical and a lifestyle practice.

Awards and Recognition
