Daysea is a 4 piece rock pop band formed in The Sutherland Shire, Sydney, NSW.The band consists of lead singer Shelley Morton, bassist Tobie Smith, drummer Vincent Sammut and lead guitarist Flyn Schofield. Daysea plays nostalgic pop rock music, drawing inspiration from musical icons such as The Beatles, Oasis, and Royal Otis.

The band was formed in 2023, when friends Vincent Sammut, Flyn Schofield and Tobie Smith decided to create Birch Place (the previous name of Daysea) fresh out of high school. At the close of 2024, Shelley Morton was invited to join the band. In 2025, they started playing live shows in the Sydney areas.

History

Vincent Sammut and Tobie Smith met at 2011 at Our Lady Of Fatima primary school in Caringbah, and began a friendship that would eventually morph into the band Daysea. In 2018, at Cronulla High School, the pair met and befriended Flyn Schofield after their first day in music class. In 2020, the group was introduced to Shelley Morton through their music elective class, and remained classmates with her until their graduation in 2023

Tobie Smith, Vincent Sammut and Flyn Schofield created the band Birch Place straight after high school while Shelley played drums in the band AYLYZA, and was focussed on her own solo career in music. At the end of 2024, Birch Place was feeling frustrated with their lack of momentum, and Shelley was feeling stuck because she didn't have a band to accompany her. This led to Shelley joining the band Birch Place, and combining her writing and knowledge of the music industry, with the bands songs and existing ability to play together seamlessly.

Birch place played fourteen shows in 2025 around the Sydney, Wollongong, and Northern Beaches areas, before changing their name to Daysea in early 2026.

Band Members

Shelley Morton

Shelley Morton became interested in music at the age of eight, when she joined her primary school concert band playing the drums. She continued learning percussion and the drums throughout primary school, while also occasionally trying her hand at other instruments and acts in school talent shows and while at home.

At twelve years old, Shelley attended a week long music camp called Girls Rock in Sydney, where she learned how to form a band, write rock songs, and play her instrument (the drums) in a more contemporary band setting. During this process, she became a member of the band Mutt Chuck, getting recognition on radio stations such as Triple J and Pedestrian TV.

Shelley discovered in Mutt Chuck that she could sing and drum simultaneously, leading her to take a major vocal role in the band. Mutt Chuck shortly disbanded at the beginning of 2019. In the summer of 2019, Shelley joined the Girls Rock program again, forming a new band named Spoonfed. This band also shortly disbanded.

During high school, Shelley played a major role in the creative and performing arts department at Cronulla High School, performing in multiple showcase nights, and eventually becoming Creative and Performing arts Captain in 2023.

Between the years of 2018 and 2023, Shelley learned the basics of guitar, ukulele, piano, and bass guitar, allowing her to write and produce music for school assignments and for her leisure. She also spent many weekends busking in Cronulla Mall, earning money and improving her guitar and vocal skills.

In 2023, Shelley joined an old primary school friend, Aylyza, as the drummer in the band for her solo project. AYLYZA played live shows rigorously from 2023-2025, and released the track DARK in 2024. Shelley has also been cited to play drums in Julienne Harvey's band on occasion throughout 2025 and 2026.

In 2024, Shelley played solo acoustic gigs showcasing a range of her own original music and covers at the University of Sydney's Manning Bar.

Vincent Sammut

Vincent Sammut learned trombone in the Bundeena orchestra in 2014, and continued playing in the orchestra until he left primary school in 2017.

Vincent started learning the drums in 2020, when he joined the year 9 elective music class of Cronulla High School, after being convinced by Tobie Smith to quit Japanese and join Music Class.

Vincent played alongside Flyn Schofield and Tobie Smith for many showcase nights and music assignments, improving his drumming ability and gaining confidence behind the kit.

Vincent's house was the birth place of the original Birch Place band, comprising himself, Flyn, and Tobie after high school.

Tobie Smith

Tobie Smith started learning saxophone in 2011, and continued playing in the Our Lady of Fatima concert band until 2017. During this time, he also took lessons in piano, and continued improving his skills on the piano well past primary school.

In high school, Tobie convinced both Flyn and Vincent to join the 2020 music elective class, and played in a band with them for school showcases and assignments.

Tobie started playing guitar in this high school class, drawing inspiration from Oasis and the Beatles.

Flyn Schofield

Flyn Schofield picked up bass guitar in 2019, and then quickly learned guitar in 2020. He spent his music elective years playing alongside Tobie and Vincent in many school assignments and showcases.

Flyn's early guitar playing was inspired by Van Halen, Queen, and INXS before his inspiration shifted to include musicians such as Royal Otis and Spacey Jane.
