Daniel Carvalho da Silva Rego (born June 10, 1975), known professionally as Daniel Rego, is a Brazilian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt, competitor, and instructor. He holds a 6th-degree black belt in the Behring lineage, awarded in 2020 by Flávio Behring, and was first certified as a black belt professor by the Brazilian Confederation of Jiu-Jitsu (CBJJ) in 1996.[1] He is the founder of Dare Jiu-Jitsu, an academy in Homestead, Florida.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Rego was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on June 10, 1975.[3] He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Universidade Paulista (UNIP), completed in 2000.[3] He began training in Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling in the early 1990s, becoming Brazilian vice-champion in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling at the 1991 national championship held by the Brazilian Confederation of Fights and Martial Arts (CBLAM).[4]
Career
[edit]Early competition and Vale Tudo
[edit]In 1995, Rego was declared Brazilian Vale Tudo (MMA) champion following a tournament series held at the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, a result covered in Revista Kiai in January 1996.[5] He also won the São Paulo state Jiu-Jitsu championship six times between 1991 and 1995, and again in 2017.[6]
Europe (1996)
[edit]In 1996, Rego relocated to Europe as an official delegate of the Brazilian Confederation of Jiu-Jitsu, teaching and competing in Spain, France, and Portugal and helping introduce Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Spanish audiences.[7] During this period he wrote instructional columns for the Spanish and Portuguese martial arts magazine Cinturón Negro/Cinturão Negro, including a technical feature on the closed and open guard.[8] He was profiled by the magazine as one of the sport's young representatives in Europe.[9] He also produced a three-volume instructional VHS series, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (vols. 1–3), and a later DVD, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Advanced Techniques, distributed internationally.[10]
IBJJF competition record
[edit]Rego has competed extensively on the master black belt circuit of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), representing Gracie Barra and later his own academy, Dare Jiu-Jitsu. As of early 2025, Rego was ranked first in the IBJJF world ranking for the Master 4 Black Belt Rooster weight division.[12]
Other championships
[edit]In addition to his IBJJF record, Rego won gold at the 2007 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship held by the Brazilian Confederation of Sport Jiu-Jitsu (CBJJE), and bronze at the same federation's World Championship in 2008.[13][14]
Dare Jiu-Jitsu
[edit]Rego founded Dare Jiu-Jitsu, an academy located in Homestead, Florida, offering classes for children, adults, and competitors in the Gracie/Behring lineage of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.[2] He is registered as a physical education professional with the Regional Council of Physical Education (CREF) of São Paulo, registration number 074869-P/SP.[15]
