Daniel Dombrowe (born 20 February 1973), also known as Dan D., is a German DJ, event organizer and social entrepreneur. He is the founder and organizer of the Baltic Soul Weekender, a soul music festival established in 2007. Dombrowe has also been involved in radio broadcasting and projects supporting soul musicians whose work has received renewed public attention through festival appearances and related initiatives.[1]
Life
[edit]Dombrowe was born in Bielefeld, Germany. He began working as a DJ after attending a training course organized by the German Disc Jockey Organization (DDO) in 1988. During the 1990s, he focused on soul music and other forms of African American popular music, organizing events and performing as a DJ in Germany and abroad.[1]
In 1997, Dombrowe moved to London, where he worked as a resident DJ and marketing manager at the Soul Café. During this period, he performed at venues including Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club[2], the 100 Club[3] and the Jazz Cafe. He also participated in lectures and discussions on youth culture and popular music.[4]
Dombrowe returned to Germany in 2001. From 2004 to 2019, he co-produced and presented The More Soul Show with Kenny B. The programme was broadcast on the Hamburg-based community broadcaster Tide.[1] Since 2020, he has hosted The Baltic Soul Show on Totally Wired Radio in London.[5]
Baltic Soul Weekender
[edit]In 2007, Dombrowe founded the Baltic Soul Weekender, an annual soul music festival held at Weißenhäuser Strand on Germany's Baltic coast. The event combines live performances, DJ sets and accommodation at the festival site. Several publications have described the festival as contributing to the growth of soul-music-oriented destination events in Germany.[6]
The festival has featured performances by artists including Ann Sexton, Marva Whitney, Gloria Scott, Melba Moore, Garland Green, Maxine Brown, Sister Sledge, Gwen McCrae, Ruby Andrews and Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes. Coverage of the event has noted that a number of performers returned to European audiences after extended absences from live performance.[1]
The Baltic Soul Weekender was nominated for the Live Entertainment Award (LEA) in the category Best Festival in 2012 and again in 2020.[7][8]
Support for soul musicians
[edit]Independent media reports have described Dombrowe's involvement in initiatives supporting soul musicians whose recording contracts from the 1960s and 1970s resulted in disputes over royalties and rights ownership. These activities have included benefit projects, fundraising efforts and cooperation with legal advisers.[9][10]
Dombrowe has also been involved in the production of compilation albums and benefit releases associated with the Baltic Soul Weekender.[1]
Recognition
[edit]Dombrowe's work as a DJ, festival organizer and advocate for soul musicians has been the subject of profiles and feature articles in German media including Die Zeit, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Hamburger Abendblatt.[1][11][12]
