Daayra is a 2026 Indian Hindi-language crime drama film directed by Meghna Gulzar. The screenplay was jointly written by Gulzar along with Yash Keswani and Sima Agarwal. Produced by Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios, the film marks the first on-screen collaboration between actors Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran.[1] It was released theatrically on 18 September 2026.[2]
Premise
[edit]The story follows two police officers who end up on opposing sides of the same investigation after a crime shocks the country and divides public opinion. As the two officers pursue the case through different approaches to duty and justice, the narrative examines how the line between what is lawful and what is seen as just can blur.[3] Promotional material for the film describes it as drawing on real-life events, though the makers have not publicly confirmed any specific case as its direct source.[4]
Cast

- Prithviraj Sukumaran as DCP Raman Kumar
Production
[edit]Development
[edit]The project was announced in early 2025, bringing together director Meghna Gulzar, known for films examining crime and justice such as Talvar, Raazi and Sam Bahadur, with a new writing team of Yash Keswani and Sima Agarwal.[5] Daayra is the third collaboration between Gulzar and production house Junglee Pictures, and the first co-production between Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios.[6]
Casting
[edit]For lead actor Kareena Kapoor Khan, Daayra is her 68th film and comes as she marks 25 years in the Hindi film industry.[7] Co-star Prithviraj Sukumaran, an established actor and filmmaker in Malayalam cinema who had recently appeared in the Hindi-language film Sarzameen, joined the cast for what became his and Kapoor's first film together.[7]
Filming
[edit]Principal photography began in mid-2025, with the production shooting extensively across various locations in and around Mumbai over several months. Filming wrapped by around the end of 2025, after which the film moved into post-production.[8]
Release
[edit]The film's release date of 18 September 2026 was announced through a teaser released in mid-2026, followed by a full trailer later that year.[9] It received a theatrical release in India as well as in international markets including Australia.[10]
