CzechTourism is the national tourism agency of the Czech Republic. It was established in 1993 under the Ministry of Economy and is now a state-funded organisation of the Ministry for Regional Development of the Czech Republic.[1] It is a member of the European Travel Commission.[1] Its director is František Reismüller.[2]

Organisation and funding

[edit]

The agency is headquartered in Prague and maintains a network of foreign representative offices.[1] For 2026 it was allocated 402 million CZK from the budget of the Ministry for Regional Development, ten million less than the previous year, with a further 14.5 million CZK expected from its own income. Almost half of its expenditure covers the agency's operations, including the foreign offices, while approximately 91 million CZK is budgeted for campaigns and promotion.[2] The agency includes the Czech Convention Bureau, which handles meetings and conference tourism.[3]

Web portals

[edit]

CzechTourism operates two tourism portals. Kudy z nudy, launched in 2004, is aimed at domestic travellers and recorded more than 43 million visits in 2025. VisitCzechia, aimed at foreign visitors, recorded close to three million visits in the same year.[2] VisitCzechia was renamed from "VisitCzechRepublic" in February 2023, following the government's 2016 adoption of "Czechia" as the official short English name of the country; the change drew both support and criticism on social media.[4]

Marketing

[edit]

The agency runs advertising campaigns in foreign markets under the brand #VisitCzechia, and organises the Czechia Travel Trade Day, a business event for inbound tour operators.[2][5] Its 2026 campaign was created by the advertising agency McCann Erickson, with an image component running in six markets on a budget of 17.5 million CZK.[5]

Public procurement case

[edit]

In September 2019, the National Organized Crime Agency charged ten people in connection with public contracts awarded by CzechTourism worth more than 27 million CZK. One of the agency's managers was charged with manipulating tenders and nine other people with bribery; police put the documented value of the bribes at 3.5 million CZK. Officers had raided the Ministry for Regional Development, CzechTourism, the Autodrom Most circuit and the agency Sport Invest in November 2018, detaining twelve people.[6][7]

In September 2023, prosecutors filed an indictment against twelve people at the Municipal Court in Prague. The principal defendant, Aleš Pangrác, was charged with arranging an unlawful advantage in public tenders, breach of duty in managing another's property, harm to the rights of others and accepting a bribe. The defendants included Petr Bursík, a Civic Democratic Party politician from Karlovy Vary.[8]
