Draft:Coda Foundation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  • Comment: Looks like the only substantial coverage of the subject comes from the Health e-news site. These sources are allowed, however since they are not independent of the subject they do not establish notability. Sulfurboy (talk) 05:38, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment: I have substantially revised the draft in response to the previous comments. I removed fundraising totals and other promotional or routine event detail, and I am not relying on the McGill Health e-News coverage to establish notability instead more so relying on the CityNews Montreal and adds the 2026 Radio-Canada and CTV News Edmonton coverage of Coda activities in Alberta. Sources affiliated with Coda or its members are used only for limited background information where appropriate. I am unsure as to whether to include the recognitions section for the award they won. The Coda Foundation (French: La Fondation Coda)is a Canadian registered charity that organizes volunteer support and other initiatives for people affected by cancer.[1] The organization developed from a student initiative established at Marianopolis College and later expanded to post-secondary institutions in several Canadian provinces.[2][3]

History

[edit]

Coda began as a student initiative at Marianopolis College in 2019. In 2021, it was relaunched by medical students at McGill University's Campus Outaouais as an intercollegiate organization.[2]

By July 2024, CityNews Montreal reported that Coda had groups at 13 academic institutions in Quebec and Ontario.[3] The organization subsequently operated as The Coda Foundation, a registered Canadian charity.[1]

Programs and Activities

[edit]

The foundation operates the Coda Comfort Crew at the Gatineau Cancerology Centre, where volunteers provide companionship and recreational materials to patients receiving chemotherapy. In 2024, McGill University's Health e-News reported that volunteers were present at the centre five days a week.[2]

Coda also organizes gift-distribution initiatives for hospitalized children. In July 2024, CityNews Montreal reported that approximately 50 volunteers prepared gift bags for distribution to more than 200 patients at CHU Sainte-Justine. The outlet reported that the initiative had begun two years earlier in association with the McGill University Health Centre and the Montreal Children's Hospital.[3]

In June 2026, Radio-Canada and CTV News Edmonton reported on a Coda group affiliated with the University of Alberta preparing gifts for pediatric cancer patients in Edmonton.[4][5]

Recognition

[edit]

In 2024, Coda received a Forces AVENIR award in the Entraide, paix et justice category for university student projects.[6][2]
